Timberdoodle's Review
Level 3:
Students will advance to new heights in their reading abilities with Level 3 of All About Reading. Adding onto the skills learned in prior levels, students will learn 16 new phonograms, including OA, IGH, KN, and others. Hands-on activities continue to provide a tactile way to review and learn words, while the exciting 25 integrated, decodable stories help increase comprehension. Chapters in Level 3 are a bit longer, allowing plots to become more detailed and nuanced, while remaining humorous and wholesome as in earlier levels. By the completion of All About Reading Level 3, many students are ready to graduate from phonics instruction to a regular reading lifestyle, while others will advance to Level 4 to finish learning all of the phonics needed to decode just about any word.

All About Reading
All About Reading (AAR) is the multisensory, mastery-based program that you’ve been hearing so much about. Suitable for all ages, and with activities that benefit all learning styles, AAR teaches phonics, decoding, fluency, and comprehension in a fun and engaging way. Moving at a gentler pace than other more intense reading programs, with AAR only one new concept is taught at a time. Their precept-upon-precept program works with all kids, and AAR’s built-in review system helps learning to stick. The progressive introduction of letters introduces vowels with consonants in a way that will allow your child to begin reading almost immediately. We particularly like how AAR integrates phonics instruction and phonics readers into a single comprehensive program, so they correlate directly with each other.

And you will be thrilled to know that no prior training is needed; AAR has lightly-scripted and illustrated “open and go” lessons that make your job easy and stress-free. Lessons are taught in short, manageable chunks, as the author recommends students spend no more than 20 minutes a day learning to read, plus another 20 listening to a read-aloud. Based on the Orton-Gillingham Approach, 97% of English words can be learned according to phonetic rules, leaving only 3% to be learned as sight words. The student activity books add a lot of variety to the lessons and provide additional support. The phonetic readers are the best we have ever seen – beautifully illustrated hardcover books with finely detailed full-color drawings. The complete AAR program consists of five levels from PreK through third grade.

Our Level 3 Standard Set:
All About Reading Level 3 Standard Set is our recommended All About Reading system, containing all the components required for teaching Level 3 except the Letter Tiles app, which is not included. The Letter Tiles app, available on various app stores, is an innovative, phenomenally effective, and incredibly convenient way to implement hands-on learning and practice with All About Reading. However, for families who prefer a less technological approach we also offer the AAR Level 3 Deluxe - With Tiles set that includes physical, magnetic letter tiles in place of the Letter Tiles app. Find more information and comparisons below.
The Level 3 Standard Set includes the Level 3 Teacher's Manual, Student Packet with Activity Book, two readers, the Reader Divider Cards, and the Reading Review Box. You’ll also need to add the Letter Tiles app, available on iTunes, Google Play, and the Kindle app store.

Deluxe - With Tiles:
The All About Reading Level 3 Deluxe kit is our standard Level 3 set, with letter tiles and magnets added, as well as a sturdy reading tote bag. These physical letter tiles and magnets can take the place of the Letter Tiles app that we recommend for users of our standard kit. For families who prefer a less technological, more tactile approach, the AAR Level 3 With Tiles set may be the perfect choice. Find more information and comparisons below.
The All About Reading Level 3 Deluxe includes everything in our Standard Kit, plus Letter Tiles, Magnets, Tote Bag, and the supplementary Phonograms Sounds App. You may also want to add a magnetic whiteboard, which is recommended but not required.

App-Based vs. Magnetic Tiles
For our Timberdoodle curriculum kits, we’ve opted for the Standard Set, which requires the Letter Tiles app, because we are enthused about the ease of use and storage. However, we know that some families will thrive on the hands-on aspect of real, physical tiles. Here is a brief comparison of the two options:

With the Letter Tiles app (required for the Standard Kit):
  • It is immediately prepared for any lesson, and automatically organizes itself
  • It's easy to capitalize words
  • You can hear the sounds of the phonograms seamlessly as you teach
  • No more worries about lost letter tiles
  • No need for a bulky whiteboard
  • Lessons are easy to teach "on the go"
  • Need to switch between students? No problem! Simply select your current lesson in All About Reading and you're ready to begin.

  • The Letter Tiles app has been All About Learning’s most requested product of all time, but the physical letter tiles have devoted fans as well.

With the physical letter tiles (Deluxe):
  • No tablet is required to complete the lessons
  • Larger tiles are easy to read
  • It's easy to incorporate hands-on alphabetizing practice
  • Tricky word parts can be highlighted with markers
  • Timeless, traditional, and tactile educational tool

  • Another outstanding component of Timberdoodle's 2018 Second-grade Curriculum Kit! and Timberdoodle's 2018 Non-religious Second-grade Curriculum Kit!

What will my student learn in Level 3?
Your student will learn exciting new concepts, including the jobs of Silent E, new phonograms, and methods for decoding multisyllable words – and continue to establish a firm foundation for a lifetime of learning. Every component of reading is taught: decoding (phonics and structural analysis), vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Below is a sampling in each area.

  • Decoding (Phonics)
  • Learn phonograms AI, AY, OA, IR, UR, OO, EA, IGH, TCH, DGE, EW, WR, KN, EIGH, OE, and TI, and read words containing the new phonograms; such as paint, play, boat, third, purple, soon, mean, light, match, budge, flew, wrong, know, sleigh, toe, and action. Also read words with Pickle syllables, as in bubble and table.

  • Decoding (Structural Analysis)
  • Identify base words; read words with vowel suffixes, as in fastest, and consonant suffixes, as in gladly; read words with prefixes, as in mistake, and learn syllable division rules for reading multi-syllable words.

  • Vocabulary
  • Discuss new words in the context of the story and one’s own life, and understand homophones, synonyms, antonyms, onomatopoeia, alliteration, similes, idioms, and personification.

  • Fluency
  • Read with accuracy, meaningful expression, and natural phrasing.

  • Comprehension
  • Connect text to one's own experiences, make predictions, compare and contrast main characters, and skim for specific information
