Show Me How to Survive
We want kids to read, so we move mountains (of books) looking for any title that will cause a reluctant reader to crack open a book. Show Me How to Survive is one such title. Not necessarily because your child will need to know how to disarm a shooter, survive a shipwreck, or rescue-breathe for a dog, but because its hundreds of illustrations and sparse text is an irresistible mix for readers and non-readers alike. Colorful, insightful, and maybe just a bit quirky, this visual guide demystifies 175 events, everything from the essential to the unusual, each explained in nearly wordless, step-by-step illustrations. As the author states, “...this book is not intended to replace professional advice or training," but as a bold new visual guidebook, Show Me How to Survive is one of the best and will be useful for reading, story-telling, and even pretend play.

Note: Show Me How to Survive is a secular title, so you will want to hit it with a touch of white-out before you hand it off to your child, particularly a few of the items suggested for the emergency preparedness kit on page 5.

Great book!

My son has already read through this book twice. He absolutely enjoys reading it!

Everything that it promised to be...

“Good, good, good, and it actually was made by someone who was a survival person. I liked all of it, but I specifically like knowing that you can’t park between big vans. That was hilarious.” That’s my 10-year-old sons review.

He absolutely was glued to the pages and carrying this book around with him to show to friends. That’s a good enough recommendation to me!

Bought this June 2017 for my 7th grader. The picture format was a nice change of pace from many words and encouraged interest. This book provided a great introduction to the topic of survival; he routinely shared what he learned from it. I never needed to schedule it into our school day; he devoured it before our school year started and continued to look at it over the year on his own time. For us, it was a winner.

Show Me How to Survive

My son loves looking through this book. It's very engaging. The only reason I am giving it 3 stars instead of 5 is because I thought we would be able to do some of the scenarios in the book, but they aren't exactly easy to do.

Show Me How to Survive

My son LOVES this book. He read it in the first two months of our school year. He's bookmarked pages and randomly spouts out what you need to do if.... Some of these are far-fetched for something he'll never encounter, but some of them are real, everyday life! I love that he has been exposed to something so practical. I would've never come up with this piecing together my own curriculum.
