Nonreligious 2020 Second-Grade Curriculum Kit
This year you will love helping your child improve his reading, math, and thinking skills. He will study the five core science disciplines, learn about the Middle Ages, and build 40 rugged STEM models. With creative art, engaging logic games, and exploration of geography and culture around the world, this year will be a year packed with happy memories for both of you!
We asked parents who used our Nonreligious Second-Grade Kit how long their student spent on "school." Nearly all of them estimated that they spent 2-3 hours a day on their kit, for 4-5 days a week. That variation is likely to be impacted by how in-depth you take your child's studies, what your child's learning approach is, how distractible he is, and much more. You’ll be able to plan yours to work best for you with your access to the online Timberdoodle Scheduler, included with your kit. Make sure you allow yourself and your child some time to find your own rhythm!

When the pandemic hit we had to transition to homeschooling and I had no time to prepare for it. I have no background in teaching so we weren't sure what to do!
Fortunately the curriculum kit comes with books for the parents as well as the students that guides how a parent should teach. There's a scheduler that helps you plan our you days/weeks/year. This kit really takes you by the hand and guides you through what could be an overwhelming task.
Can't recommend it enough!
As a first time homeschooler this year, I was so thankful to have stumbled upon Timberdoodle! I knew right away that this was the right choice for us (and when I read another reviewer say that they cried tears of joy when their kit arrived 🙌🏻). Such a weight off to have everything curated so well! And to have the handbook and scheduler, these tools have been so helpful and made me feel like I could actually do this!! Loving this year of homeschool! Thank you so much!!!
This is my third year homeschooling and second year using Timberdoodle, and now with a second grader and a preschooler this curriculum has been such a lifesaver. My son loves all of the hands on activities and is really excelling. I highly recommend Timberdoodle!
First-time homeschoolers. I liked the idea of everything I needed coming together and I felt like the videos describing the products made it sound like this could be child-led some of the time. I have found the kit to have everything we need, however, I feel it is very much teacher-led. For second grade, there is just too much to keep track of without us managing it most of the time. I do think my daughter needs more advanced math and reading curriculums than what comes in the standard kit. Since we are new, I didn't know exactly how to go about customizing. I was so excited about the online scheduler, but I find it tedious, especially when we need to edit from the original plan. I've spent hours trying to get accurate checklists to print out - could just be my inexperience with it. All in all, the curriculum did come with everything we need. We are just supplementing with more advanced math and reading since it really was a lower level than what she needs. I feel like that was a little wasted, but now I know. I am thankful for all the games in the kit. They break up the "work".
Thank you for your review! We truly appreciate hearing about your experience with our curriculum kit! I am so sorry for the confusion on customizing, that would have been so frustrating, but I am glad you have worked it out.
I did want to respond about the curriculum being able to be child-led, and hopefully, this helps.
It is perfectly normal to take a while to settle into a new routine. That you have to oversee a lot of the curriculum right now is ok! But once you have gotten your feet wet with what homeschooling looks like in your family, it could be an excellent time to sit down and make some goals for how you would like the rest of the year to go. Maybe even break it down to how the next couple of weeks or month goes.
You could start by generating two schedules (just a checklist written out or using our scheduler), one for you to manage and one for your daughter to manage, or instead highlight the topics on your main schedule that you want her to do. If your daughter's schedule includes only everything she can currently work on independently MOST of the time, only needing your assistance occasionally, that would be a great place to start.
Then we would suggest setting up a reward system for what works for you both. Maybe a movie on Friday night, family game night, a new book from the library, one-on-one time with mom, baking together, etc. Whatever would motivate and reward your daughter and be sustainable for you. When we were growing up (Timberdoodle prodigy here), our reward was a family video night on Friday. Those that got their school done got to watch; those that didn't were in their rooms finishing up their school lists.
Then give your daughter her list to work on during the times you want her to be independent. Depending on where she is in her ability to self-direct, you may need to start with assisting her to self-directing. So, 'here is your list, pick two things off it and do them, then come talk to me,' or, 'Let's read the directions/watch the instruction/read the chapter together, and then you need to complete this activity,' etc. By slowly increasing the expectations and her responsibilities, she should begin to become self-directed.
I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any further questions or need more specific ideas.
--Hope for the Timberdoodle team
I love the video section to get a good feel of the reasons behind what curriculum they send. I enjoy the scheduler app, the amazing flexibility their schedule provides, and all the teacher resources that are available. This is a company we will stand behind for the long haul!
We started with the Second grade elite curriculum. It has come with everything we needed to open and begin! It took a week or two to settle into the routine, but it’s so nice that it’s all included! It definitely takes out the guesswork out of the lesson plans!
