ThinkPlay STEM Junior Xtra collection is an international award-winning construction system with outstanding educational uses. Granted the prestigious Tillywig Brain Child Gold Award, the Practical Preschool Gold Award, as well as the Primary Teacher Gold Award, the ThinkPlay STEM Junior 400-piece set is amazingly durable and comes with a boatload of project ideas.
More than 60 spiral-bound pages of easy-to-follow photographs show, step by step, how to build a huge, incrementally more difficult variety of models. Better still, many of the initial construction instructions begin by having your child place the appropriate shapes on the pages so that the correct shapes and quantities are located before construction begins.
Note: Colors in your set may vary from those depicted in your manual.
This high level of structured guidance distinguishes Thinkplay STEM Junior from any other building set for this age range. The squares, triangles, and wheels connect and disconnect easily, yet create remarkably secure structures that do not fall apart. Stack them or interlock them on their sides—ThinkPlay square bricks are the same size as traditional middle-size Duplo bricks and are 100% compatible but infinitely more versatile.
Timberdoodle’s ThinkPlay STEM Junior set also features specialized Xtra connectors, shaped like “T”s and “r”s. These unique connector pegs, beyond the pre-attached connectors and standard linear and X-shaped pegs, allow the builder to change the direction of their construction, and to create even more varied models with the ThinkPlay STEM Junior set.
ThinkPlay STEM Junior encourages a wide variety of cognitive benefits in your younger children: fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination, convergent/divergent thinking, creativity, problem solving, and spatial skills. Colors will vary. For ages 4 - 8.

They are my sons new favorite, all he wants to do is build things. He builds random designs as well as follows the books. There are many designs to choose from with excellent detail. It took him a bit to get used to how they fit together but he was determined and had no problems fitting them together within the first day of having them.
While a little hard to use/get used to, my 3yo was able to figure it out and build the pictures on her own. She does have a high level of concentration, so this may not be true for every 3 yo, but one day she was playing and then showed me what she built by herself. The large pictures are really great because of the ability to build strait on the model.
If you are considering this for a child younger than 4 years old, I would reconsider. I got this as part of a Custom Preschool Curriculum kit for my 3 year old son who loves to build and has lots of building experience with different resources. The grooved parts of the pieces, which make the finished objects more sturdy and allow you to build out in addition to up, were quite difficult for my son. Now that he is 4 years old we are able to use the documentation together to build. He loves the vehicles you can build with the set!
My kids love following the patterns of creating their own things to build with these. Only complaint is that sometimes they can be hard to put together or pull apart for my preschooler if they’re not lined up properly.
All four of us (parents included) love these! Our neighbors have borrowed them because THEY love them. I really appreciate the two manuals that come with the blocks: these make it easy to designate pages/projects to complete throughout the week. My four-year-old initially had a difficult time sliding the blocks together but after a few uses, they loosened up and she was able to do any project basically by herself. They help with eye-hand coordinating, counting, colors, shapes, placement, following pictorial directions. They are pricey but worth it...and way cooler (and less painful to step on :)!) than Legos!
