Language Smarts Level B Grade 1
Out of all of our new Critical Thinking Press titles, Language Smarts is my favorite. If you've used and loved Mathematical Reasoning than you'll be delighted by the familiar, colorful pages and thinking-skills based approach.
Language Smarts is specifically designed to be thorough enough to be a complete language arts curriculum, but unique enough to be a valuable supplement if your child is ready for more than they are getting from another approach.
Rhymes and riddles, editing activities, mind-benders, sequencing, writing… each page is brightly colored and contains enough white space to feel easily doable. With 316-336 pages per book, 1-2 pages a day will have your student completing the book within a school year. Don't be surprised though if they ask for more. To a child, the pages often seem more like fun puzzles than school work!
Answers are located in the back of this book.

Fun and colorful! We tried some other workbooks first and they were just so dry. This one is much more lively which keeps my 1st grader wanting to check it out!
I am not the greatest at all our our lovely language rules. I was struggling to find something to help me teach these things and found my life saver in Language Smarts. We started with lesson B and we are currently on C. I help read aloud the rules and explain them and my kids are able to grasp the concepts easily.
This book is definitely more of a supplemental book than an actual main curriculum book. We pick and choose our pages, and though it often describes the definitions of the words, it doesn't do a very good job at actually teaching the concepts. We will however continue to use it as a supplemental book, as it does help to strengthen my child's knowledge of the subject taught from a different book.
I read through the other reviews and sure, there are issues of some slight imperfections but honestly I just work through them with my first grader. He's 6 and just thrilled with his English book. Thanks to Timberdoodle for offering this series! For the longest time my first grader was mostly interested in math (which isn't bad at all) but until this book other English programs weren't getting through the concepts of grammar without frustrating him. For me, a happy student is a student who will remember more of what he's taught.
I like the idea of this book but in practice it is just does not work for us. My daughter was excited about the colorful pages and the fun look, but every day this book was frustrating and on extreme days, brought her to tears. If your first grader isn't a super-reader, but rather an average reader for a 6 year old, expect to be doing a lot of side by side reading for this book. Maybe we will try it again later in the year.
