Language Smarts Level D Grade 3
Out of all of our new Critical Thinking Press titles, Language Smarts is my favorite. If you've used and loved Mathematical Reasoning than you'll be delighted by the familiar, colorful pages and thinking-skills based approach.
Language Smarts is specifically designed to be thorough enough to be a complete language arts curriculum, but unique enough to be a valuable supplement if your child is ready for more than they are getting from another approach.
Rhymes and riddles, editing activities, mind-benders, sequencing, writing… each page is brightly colored and contains enough white space to feel easily doable. With 316-336 pages per book, 1-2 pages a day will have your student completing the book within a school year. Don't be surprised though if they ask for more. To a child, the pages often seem more like fun puzzles than school work!
Answers are located in the back of this book.

We are about 2 weeks into this book. I bought it after using our "1st years language" book for a few months. That 1st book got a little too aggressive and not so much 3rd grade level for where we are at, and so I got this as an English/grammar curriculum replacement. It has been great so far. It goes into more detail and practice on each area instead of just 1 lesson-1 page like the other book did. The lessons are comprehensive, but also easy to follow and the lages are very engaging and encouraging for my daughter. It still gives her a challenge, but a great substitute for the other book we started out with.
Good book! My 3rd grader hates writing so it's a struggle to find her a good workbook. After a couple fails, we found this one and really enjoy it. Being so colorful and illustrated makes her more interested in opening it up and the work is presented better than many other drier books. She still doesn't love writing but this book gets us through Language Arts without tears and I'll take that!
This colorful and engaging book hooks our son's interest daily which is saying something for someone who wanted nothing to with language arts previously! I appreciate the repetition available for practice with just enough variation to continue to be interesting.
This is the first time we've used The Critical Thinking Co. for langugage studies, and I'm definitely impressed. It's very thorough, breaking the parts of language and words down into detailed studies. It's heavily phonics-learning-oriented, with careful attention to parts of words like digraphs and diphthongs. (Don't worry -- If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I didn't know what these were until we started using the book, either, but it's making perfect sense to all of us now.) In fact, by doing these detailed language studies, I think my third-grader's reading has improved. It also contains beautiful review of grammar and writing skills typically learned in 1st-2nd grade. I'm going to order the 2nd grade book for my second child and see if I like it just as much as this one.
It seems ok! We started this week and I like how easy it is for the kids. I am just using it in place of english. They think english is boring.
