Science in the Beginning
The Berean Science series teaches science as discovered throughout history, so it makes perfect sense for the series to open right at the beginning with the six days of creation.

Science in the Beginning provides 15 lessons for each of the six days of creation, incorporating a vast variety of topics and experiments. These include light and eyesight in Unit 1; tornadoes in Unit 2; a crayon rock cycle in Unit 3; a toilet paper map of the solar system in Unit 4; whether saltwater or freshwater fish drink more in Unit 5; and how cats, dogs, and rabbits see differently in Unit 6. All the while, students are referred back to the Creator who fashioned all the marvels they are studying.

The Science in the Beginning Set includes the text as well as the slim helps & hints book. Helps & Hints for Science in the Beginning contains answers for the review exercises in the text, as well as hints to make checking, correcting, and explaining the students’ work easier. And while the author suggests that testing is unnecessary for most families, he includes tests and test solutions for families who do find it beneficial. See our optional lab kit here.

Berean Science
New to Timberdoodle, Berean Science offers students an opportunity to study science through the lens of history. Using a narrative dialogue and a Christian worldview, Berean Science teaches science chronologically, so there are vast and varied science topics in each volume. Fairly bursting with experiments - every lesson has some sort of activity - Berean Science’s strong focus on this hands-on component makes it an ideal program for the wigglers in your household.

The hardcover textbooks have lots of full-color illustrations and the lesson are concise, but complete, distilling down to the core of what your child needs to know. Activities, all color-coded and easy to find quickly, often involve inexpensive household items, and are the gateway to the exploration of each scientific concept. Lesson material is often just a page or two following each activity, perfect for any child that struggles to sit and pay attention. And because each lesson concludes with questions or additional activities for "younger," "older," and "oldest" students, Berean Science lends itself well to multi-grade homes that prefer to use just one science curriculum for the entire family. Lessons are taught directly from the text, so parents and students share the same book.

Sprinkled throughout the text are optional "challenge" lessons that you are free to skip if time is an issue. Each book has a helpful section in the front that tells you all the materials you will need, broken down per chapter, for doing the experiments. If you would like a convenient, time-saving way to get nearly all of the materials you will need for the experiments, we now offer a lab kit! This lab kit is already assembled with virtually every non-household item the curriculum requires, so you won't have to go searching for elusive components. Berean Science is an excellent way to teach science, and a welcomed addition to the Timberdoodle kits.

”This curriculum is very experiment heavy and the kids absolutely love this. The kids are so excited to do their science program every week and I cannot tell you how excited that makes me!”

TIM-BER-DOODLE!!!!

This book is SO FUN! We are currently working on the first day of creation: light. So far we've done experiments on reflecting light, the colors in light, how light reflects and absorbs colors, sunlight and thermal energy, and lighting a bulb with mechanical energy. Earlier this week we used a magnifying glass to light a fire and today we saw a balloon light a compact fluorescent light bulb using mechanical energy!

Some of the terms and concepts may be a bit above my daughter's head, but she understands the main concept and can easily answer the questions at the end of each lesson and she has loved every experiment. We both get excited when I pull out the science book to see what we'll be doing that day. Thank you so much, Timberdoodle!

*I would like to add that I have really been appreciating the Science in the Beginning Lab Kit as it saves me from running around to find items needed for our experiments. You could totally buy each separately and maybe for less money, but I am grateful I splurged on this item!

Hard for our 6 year old

This book was hard for our 6 year old to understand. I would read the lesson because she could not read the book and then when we got to the questions she was not able to answer all the questions. Maybe we will try again in 2nd grade but we are not sure.

Will be great in a couple years

I feel much of the material is over my 6 year old's head but do appreciate the variety of experiments and how easy they are to do at home. We're sticking with it but I skip reading sections of the text when it's too much. I feel this would be better put with an older grade curriculum kit.

This is a great book. That said, I felt it would be better suited for when my daughter is a little older so I shelved it and will bring it back out in a year or two. I need something a little easier for me. lol My daughter was all about it even if I felt it was a little advanced for her as a 1st grader.

Not for us

This science curriculum wasn't a good fit for our family. While I did love that is is Biblically based, the reading was tiresome. Some of the experiments were hard to understand or simply not fun. I stopped using this mid-year and might try it with another kiddo in a few years. My son is just VERY hands-on and mechanically minded, so this didn't enrich his abilities at all.
