It was a little overwhelming when our school stuff came! However, the online scheduler makes it easier to make sure I'm not forgetting anything! As a whole it feels a little book heavy, but we have found ways to break it up. We will do Spelling U See, which I really enjoy and I was surprised to see how my son is improving! 6 daily writing traits. That doesn't take long, but over the 5 days really helps put together the topic for the week! Then we set a timer for 5 mins and play Ultimo, my son loves this game! It's a perfect break. Practices critical thinking and doesn't interrupt the flow of our work. We use the art projects to work on quietly while listening to Story of the World. We typically listen to the same chapter 2x. I wish Story of the wild came with a huge timeline we could fill in as we go! I may make my own. The extra things that come with the Elite are the things that keep it from being one book to the next. My only complaint is science. I love science, but I thought the science was boring and more focused on the people then actual science. The first chapter and science experiment was lost to my son. I don't think he understood how they were connected at all. I will sub this with something else if I homeschool again next year. Lastly is the l literature. I was scared by this set at first, but once we started doing a little each day, I have found it to be a sweet time with my son. We have great discussions, the stories keep him entertained, and the teacher manual is helpful for me to point out different details and things we need to be learning. Math U See has been fun and simple to teach. Overall, I'm really hoping we homeschool next year, I will definitely be buying the next kit.
I love the option to customize the curriculum kits, because there are times we already have an item or have another plan for a subject. However, for some reason it kept deleting from the cart when I added another curriculum kit, and I had to restart the Customizer over again three or four times.
Overall this is a really fun kit. My son loves all the hands on activities but I wish there were other options for some of the main curriculums. We are not a fan of the literature set. I wish there were other options that were far less textbooky. We were also not a huge fan of the spelling either. We have found Spelling Power to be much more effective and a lot less busy work. The spelling has a ton of just copywork which for some kids is not fun at all. I *think* you can get All About Spelling but we have done almost all of them already. The history graphic novels have been wonderful. I had no idea you could get history or science ones and we have been adding more to our book collection. We absolutely love Math U See so love that it is in this kit. We also really love First Language Lessons. I am sad its our last year using it and am curious to see what they put in its place for next year. Overall its a great kit for someone starting out and I am glad we tried it. There are a few things such as literature and spelling that we have passed along to other families as it doesn't fit with our learning style. I do wish they had a couple more options when choosing to make a custom curriculum (which we did not use this time we bought the package as is).
This kit is the perfect combination of every important thing that a 4th grader needs to know - and makes a student love learning in the process! My fourth grader has gone from hating school to wanting to do it with her extra free time because she feels smart and empowered to learn thanks to so many items in this kit. STEM activities benefit her hands-on learning tendencies, but there is also a traditional math and reading program included that fulfills all our other needs so she can be the best student possible. Highly recommend!
Review from my soon to be 4th grader, "I can't wait to start the new school work! Timberdoodle should just be called Fun School not homeschool."
