How Does Bear Feel?
How Does Bear Feel? helps young children recognize, name, and talk about emotions through simple stories and expressive bear faces. Designed for preschool and early elementary ages, this hands-on activity turns emotional vocabulary practice into an engaging game.
The set includes 20 bear emotion cards and 100 short story scenarios based on situations familiar to young children. As you read each story aloud, your child chooses the bear card that best matches how the character might be feeling. Along the way, children learn to distinguish between emotions such as disappointment, frustration, worry, excitement, and pride.
Because the stories focus on everyday experiences, the conversations often extend beyond the activity itself. Children begin making connections between the bears' feelings and their own experiences, creating natural opportunities to discuss empathy, self-awareness, and appropriate responses to challenging situations.
The open-ended format works well in homeschool settings, classrooms, co-ops, counseling environments, and family discussions. While most scenarios reflect common childhood experiences, a few may be worth previewing to ensure they align with your family's values.
Parents appreciate that How Does Bear Feel? teaches emotional vocabulary directly rather than assuming children will pick it up naturally. By giving children specific words for what they are experiencing, this simple activity helps build skills they will use in friendships, family relationships, and everyday communication.
How to Play How Does Bear Feel?
- Choose one of the story cards and read the scenario aloud to your child.
- Ask your child to select the bear card that best matches how the character in the story might be feeling. Encourage him to explain his choice. There is rarely just one "correct" answer, and the conversation is often more valuable than the card selection itself.
- If your child struggles to identify the emotion, talk through the clues together. What happened in the story? How might that make someone feel? Has your child ever experienced something similar?
- One or two stories at a time is plenty for most young children. Short, consistent discussions tend to be more effective than working through large batches of cards at once.
- As your child becomes more comfortable identifying emotions, expand the conversation by asking how the character could respond, what might help them feel better, or whether different people might feel differently in the same situation.

My 2 and 4.5 year old kids LOVE this game. They ask to play it every day. It is teaching them the vocabulary surrounding feelings (jealous, disappointed, embarassed).
