Timberdoodle's Review
Lab Kit for Exploring the Building Blocks of Science Book 2
Have you ever used Building Blocks of Science and wished you had a prebuilt lab kit with the supplies you needed instead of having to go out and get the items yourself? Have you thought about using Building Blocks of Science, but felt intimidated by having to search several stores to gather all of the lab supplies? Whether you’ve been one of these people, or are just now finding Building Blocks of Science, you’ll be happy to know that you can now make your life easier, and save a ton of time by purchasing the lab supply kit that correlates to the experiments in Building Blocks of Science 2.

The lab kit contains over 30 items you are not likely to have around the house. You will still need to gather a few things from around the house, like a few common office supplies, some kitchen items, balls, etc. You may also have to buy food items, but trust us, this is a good thing. You do not want a kit shipped to your house full of fresh fruits, vegetables, and cheese that has been sitting on a shelf waiting for months and months for just the right family to adopt it. That would be a lab experiment unto itself by the time it arrived, and you may find yourself needing to move just to get away from the smell. So you may have to pick up some perishable items if you don’t have them in your pantry already. However, for the things you would have to pick up at the craft store, hobby store, and/or superstore, this handy kit has virtually all of them in just the quantities you’ll need to complete your experiments. This kit also does not include a handful of optional or cost-prohibitive items that you won't find in your home. If you do choose to complete those experiments or parts of experiments, you'll need to pick those up.

Please keep in mind, however, that this kit is designed to be used by a parent or teacher with a child. It is not intended for use by children 12 and under unsupervised. Plus, you’ll have so much fun, why wouldn’t you want to join in?

    Fun for my 2nd grader

My 2nd grade son loves science (and anything that's hands-on). Getting this kit gave him more ways to explore and participate in hands-on learning.

Helpful but pay attention to what is not included too

This was helpful to get a lot of the things needed for the experiments. I ended up not liking the actual program, but this kit was nice for the experiments that we did end up doing. It didn't have everything, so make sure you read ahead on what you'll need for the next week so you can make sure you're prepared.

    Everything you need!

It’s simple and provides everything you need to conduct the experiments for each lesson.

Lab kit makes the program more doable

The Science Lab kit has made my job of teching the material so much easier. The items in the box are perfect, even down to a protist kit!! The two second graders using it are loving it!! There are a few things that the kit cannot provide, like for experiment 9, fruit and bread. But, the kit is well worth having. Thanks for offering this time saving product!!

    What a Waste of Money

I purchased this lab kit thinking that although I had many of the items listed, the cost was justified as it would cover all of the labs/experiments for our book except for food items. to say I was mistaken is an understatement. Basically, anything that is needed that is difficult to find is still on you. Butterfly or insect wing for the first one is on you - don't worry they will sell you it for an additional fee or you can do what I did and order from Amazon ($20). Then there is the red cabbage jelly juice that you need for a few things, that's on you as well. Again, this company will sell it to you for an additional cost or you can find on your own Amazon ($15). And the last one I looked at was the 10oz Rock Pick that is needed. And again instead of paying an additional fee to this third party company, I bought it from Amazon ($14). This does not include all of the "you can use vinegar" or other alternatives they suggest.
So for gloves, paper towel middle, some lenses (magnify glass and two small others), and CLEAR PLASTIC CUPS and other items --- for $75 (which I had most of), I spent another $50 and probably more to actually have a complete kit.
While I hoped this would let me save time so I wouldn't have to track anything down but food items, I ended up having to do just that.
DO NOT BUY expecting to not have to add several other items that you will have to find and buy.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thorough review! We are so sorry for your disappointment! After reading your review, we took another look at our write-up online and realized that we had not been as clear about what was or was not included in the lab kit as we wished we had been. For that, I apologize.
We do acknowledge that the cost of purchasing ALL the items for ALL the experiments is indeed cost-prohibitive. That being the case, we did not include the more expensive items and consider them optional. We do not feel your child must complete every experiment. Some families will wish to, and that is wonderful, but most families will, like ours, find life a bit too crazy for everything and so will choose to just read the lesson on some weeks. That being the case, we did not include the more expensive items, which would have made the entire kit prohibitively priced.
I hope this makes sense. We have since gone out and added some clarification to our website so families can now purchase with a more precise understanding of what is included and what is omitted. Again, I apologize for the frustration we caused and thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback.
