Laser Chess
If your family likes abstract strategy games and finds lasers intriguing, then they will have a blast with Laser Chess. “Chess-like” only in that it involves capturing a king, Laser Chess is mostly about thinking multiple steps ahead of your opponent. There are five starting setup options shown in the rulebook, but you can also come up with your own. Players take turns moving mirrored playing pieces around the board. Each turn ends with the firing of a laser beam. If the beam strikes a non-mirrored surface of any piece, you must remove that piece from play. Hit your opponent’s king, and you win! Be careful. It is all too possible to leave yourself open to attack or inadvertently bounce the laser onto your own king.

The lasers themselves are encased in two small orb-shaped tokens that fit onto the corners of the game grid. These can be rotated during gameplay to fire along either the long or short edge of the board. The actual laser beam isn’t visible during gameplay, just the spot where it hits.

”Laser Chess was actually really easy to learn, and is geared toward ages 8 and up. My husband and my 8th grader had the most fun with this game. The goal is to set your mirrors on the board to send your laser to hit the opponent’s king.”

”Let's start by saying I do not, nor does anyone in our family, play chess. And that is OK. Because other than the fact that you are trying to "capture" someone's king and certain play pieces can do special things, this game is not like traditional chess.”

”The objective of Laser Chess is the same as its predecessor – regicide! Be the first to eliminate your opponent’s king and you’re the victor. But the new spin is that you zap them with lasers! ”

”This is a game for serious strategists! There is a ton to think about with every move. For us, at least, it moves pretty slowly.”

”Laser Chess is a two-player game that combines the strategy of chess with the fun of the laser beams. The players take turns moving or rotating one of their mirrored pieces on the board and then firing their laser beam in hopes of striking one of their opponents pieces. ”

”This is not your grandpa’s chess game. If you thought chess was already a fun and amazing thinking game, lasers put this game over the top. I mean who doesn't love lasers.”
