The A-Z Uppercase Magnatab draws children in. One pass of the magnetic stylus and tiny metal beads pop to the surface with a satisfying click, transforming letter practice into an activity many preschoolers happily repeat again and again.
Each uppercase letter is formed by tracing with the magnetic stylus, helping children practice pencil-like control, hand-eye coordination, and letter formation. When they're ready to start over, a simple swipe of the finger pushes the beads back down, resetting the board for another round while providing additional fine-motor practice.
Parents sometimes assume the Magnatab is primarily a handwriting program. In reality, its greatest strength is preparing little hands for writing. The repeated tracing motions help build finger strength, control, and familiarity with letter shapes long before children are expected to write confidently on paper.

How to Use the Magnatab
- Bring out the Magnatab two or three times each week for short practice sessions. Start with one or two familiar letters, such as the first letter of your child's name or a favorite animal.
- Encourage your child to trace each letter with the magnetic stylus, watching and feeling the metal beads rise into place. When the letter is complete, have him press the beads back down with a finger before tracing again. Both actions help strengthen the fine-motor skills needed for future handwriting.
- As confidence grows, challenge your child to find specific letters, match letters to their sounds, or trace letters that appear in current reading or phonics lessons.
- Older preschoolers and kindergarteners may enjoy using the Magnatab to build simple words after tracing individual letters. Some children also like tracing a letter on the Magnatab and then attempting it on paper while the shape is still fresh in their minds.
- Don't worry about perfect letter formation. The primary goal is to develop hand strength, control, letter familiarity, and confidence. Accurate handwriting will come with time and practice.
Most importantly, keep the sessions short and enjoyable. The satisfying tactile feedback is part of what makes the Magnatab so effective, and children are more likely to return to activities that feel like play rather than work.

The Magnatab is a fun and amusing learning aid, for student and teachers alike! The clicking of the magnetic balls against the pen is fulfilling, and the bright colors are eye catching. My only complaint is that I now want one with the lowercase letters and numbers, but great product!

We love the Magnatab to reinforce learning and writing the alphabet! The tab helps my son write out the letters with correct form, but in a more fun way than just tracing on paper. He loves watching the magnet balls pop up with each stroke.

I read in Timberdoodle's handbook that the Magnatab isn't really meant to introduce proper penmanship as much as it's meant to help with letter recognition, and not to worry if the child isn't tracing the letters in the correct progression. However, I really love this tool for its introduction to and reinforcement of proper penmanship. I always use it with my daughter when I'm by her side, and I think it's exactly what she needs before I hand her a marker and have her start free-handing or tracing letters on a wipe-clean board. I also read that some don't like the stylus not being connected, but I actually hate when a stylus is connected with a string. To me, the untethered stylus is great and I'm not worried about losing it since I keep it stored away when she's not using it.

A Creative Start to Penmanship

I very much like this magnatab! My son loves to play with it and I think it's a wonderful way to introduce writing the letters. My son is very much a sensory and kinesthetic learner (so far) and the feeling of the stylus pulling up the metal balls and pushing them back in is very pleasing to him. I also like that the letters have different colors to attract the eye and distinguish between them. I'm knocking off a star because the stylus is not attached to the magnatab (it's understandable why it isn't) so it could be easily lost if you're not paying attention, rendering the whole thing useless if it is. Also, as a previous reviewer noted, if you aren't paying attention it could instill bad writing habits. So overall I'm very happy the Magnatab is in here but it's only for an introduction to penmanship. As an educational tool it should not be used if you can't pay attention and should be moved on from to the actual pencil and paper to make sure it doesn't give bad writing habits that need to be corrected.
