Timberdoodle's Review
Amish Pathway Readers
Many years ago, when our children were beginning readers, we used the Pathway Readers to successfully monitor and encourage an ongoing reading program. Designed to be used in Amish classrooms, these basal readers are solidly wholesome, with none of the fantasy that is commonplace in both Christian and secular readers. If you are weary of the brashness that is evident in readers with contemporary story lines, you'll find these a refreshing alternative. Here the children are expected to obey their parents, respect their teachers, ask forgiveness when they do wrong, and humbly submit to the discipline of those in authority! Yet they still enjoy life!!

Because the Amish don't use electricity, you won't find stories dealing with the latest in films, computers, or TVs. Instead, the stories are centered around farm life, with horse auctions, harvests, and LARGE families. We have compared these books to several home school basal readers and have found that they are more challenging in the lower grades and infinitely more interesting. With simple typesetting and a few black-and-white sketches, these hardback books are not splashy, but are lovely in their simplicity.

Please note: written decades ago, some of the discussion of consequences in these books may have an alarming sound when read in today’s context. As always, be prepared to discuss with your child any passages of concern.

I bought this set for my boys because I can remember reading these to my mother! I loved them and now my boys love them! Making precious memories!

So glad Timberdoodle has this now!

I have been using Pathway Readers since I started homeschooling my children 5 years ago. While this is my first year purchasing from Timberdoodle, I love this series. I love that the books build on each other, and that the story is easy for my children to follow. I also use the workbooks (which, unfortunately Timberdoodle doesn't sell, but are easy to find elsewhere) which only increases my children's understanding.I feel that these books are a must have for your homeschool library, and that my children have been able to increase their reading and comprehension skills by using them. We pulled our oldest at the end of her first grade year. She hated reading when we brought her home. Within days, I couldn't get her to put the books down! And, because we were also using the workbooks, my phonics skills increased.I highly recommend this program. It is inexpensive (always a plus in my book), and easy for the children to use. It goes well with any of the Dick and Jane books that my parents used (and me, too - in the interest of full disclosure here...), and allows even my very beginning readers to feel successful as they read. I love to hear, "Can I read you a story, Mom?"An added bonus is that my children are seeing through literature, that I am not the only parent on the planet who disciplines with love and teaches my children to work hard. I had these books recommended to me, and I will continue to do the same!

Great Value for So Many Inspiring Readers!

I love the Pathway series so much! They're written perfectly to reading level and each book is a new step up in comprehension and challenge. These books were written in the 70s but their stories and the messages in them are timeless. They includes selections from well-known classics writers including Emily Dickenson, Elizabeth Browning, The Bible, Truman Douglas, and others. They include stories about our forefathers, moments in US and world history, and other stories that are absolutely captivating and inspiring. I love this series and highly recommend it more than any other I've come across!

    A worthwhile investment

This set of readers is definitely worth the investment! The books range from 1st grade to 8th grade, but you will find your children will enjoy the entire set of books, no matter their age. I actually enjoy them as an adult, as well. These don't need to be done with workbooks. Their value is in the wholesome edifying stories that fill the pages.

    Good Wholesome Readers

My children really enjoy these readers. They have wholesome stories that encourage good character. We appreciate the values portrayed and the strong emphasis on respectful/loving family relationships in these books that make our reading time more profitable.
