STEMnex V8 Model Engine
STEMnex V8 Model Engine kit builds a realistic, though greatly simplified, working model of a combustion engine and includes light and sound features, light-up spark plugs, moving pistons, valve gear, fan belt, and all the parts and tools you need to assemble the working model. Unlike other inferior models, the STEMnex V8 Model Engine uses no glue. Parts screw or clip together, so the engine can be taken apart and rebuilt multiple times. The informative manual gives clear, step-by-step instructions to guide your teen through the building process.
From the Manufacturer:
Learn everything you need to know about the heart of a vehicle and how it provides the power for a car to run. Building this 270-piece plastic model of a combustion engine will allow you to see the inner workings of an engine.Turning your STEMnex engine on, you will see and hear how a real V8 operates.
This model is a simulation of a real engine. No gasoline is used. In this model, the crankshaft is cranked by the motor. When a bulb lights up, it represents air-fuel mixture being combusted. The inlet and exhaust valves will automatically open and close at the proper time, in phase with that undergoing cycle. The demonstration will operate for approx. 30 seconds. A speaker will simulate the sound of a true V8 engine.

This is such a perfect item for middle and high school students that have a great attention to detail and love working with their hands. My son was so happy when he completed it because it was something done entirely by him over the course of several weeks to months.
Hey so built this model with a friends kid who i bought it for around xmas. However the first time around i had issues with the pistons stricking valves. After some searching i found a mistake in the manual. Cam lob 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 needed to be swapped with eachother. Because the orientation in the picture did not match the orientation once all the pieces were put in order 1-8. After i swapped 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 it matched the picture and worked when i ran it. The order i had them in went 12436578 which like i said matched the picture
I bought this for my handy 15 year old son as I thought it would be a good intro into engines. He enjoyed it and completed it in one day. You could spread it out by having them complete the readings and associated build, having them disassemble and complete by memory, as well as learning all the technical names. I marked it down only because it is on the pricier end for something that is completed in a day. I didn't mind the price as I have multiple children that will use it.
