Arctic Stone Carving Kit
Three blocks of soft stone become three carved arctic animals. This set brings together three Studiostone Creative carving kits: a polar bear and a seal in white alabaster, and an orca in Brazilian soapstone.This works well for kids who are ready for something slower and more deliberate than typical craft kits. The stone is soft enough to shape with hand tools, but still solid, so each change comes from steady effort.
Your child begins with a pre-cut form and uses the included file and sandpaper to refine the shape. As the surface changes, the animal becomes more defined, with each pass removing just enough material to move the design forward.
The alabaster finishes a soft, near-white color. The Brazilian soapstone runs through greens, browns, and grays, and no two blocks are alike. The two stones do not behave the same way under the file, so the third carving is not a repeat of the first.
The instructions are visual and straightforward, so your child can focus on the process instead of decoding directions. Toward the end, the included wax and cloth bring out the natural color and give the surface a smooth finish.
All tools are sized for beginners, making the project manageable without taking away the feel of working with real stone.
By the end, your child is holding three finished pieces that show every curve and surface of the work he put into them.
How to Use the Arctic Stone Carving Kit
- Set out the stone, tools, and a small cup of water. Give your child a steady surface to work on without rushing.
- Start by shaping the form with the file. Work slowly, focusing on one area at a time so your child can see how each pass changes the surface.
- Keep the stone slightly damp while carving. This reduces dust and helps the tools move more smoothly.
- As the shape becomes clearer, spend time rounding the larger areas before focusing on smaller details. Getting the overall form right first makes the final result look more complete.
- Switch to sandpaper to smooth the surface. This is where the rough edges fade, and the sculpture begins to feel finished.
- At the end, apply the wax and buff the surface. Removing excess wax before it dries helps create a cleaner, more even finish.
- Work in short sessions. What matters is giving your child time to carefully shape the stone.
This set uses two stones. Alabaster is a semi-translucent stone from Spain that finishes a beautiful white. Brazilian soapstone runs through earthy greens, browns, and grays, and the exact color of a block varies, so the finished carving is your child's alone. Use water to shape either stone. All supplies are included in our premium level kit.
