All About Spelling Level 1
Weekly spelling lists may prepare a child for Friday's test, but they rarely build lasting spelling skills. All About Spelling Level 1 takes a different approach, teaching the patterns and rules that govern English spelling so your child can spell with understanding instead of memorization.
Built on the trusted Orton-Gillingham method, Level 1 introduces spelling one concept at a time. Your child learns more than 40 foundational phonograms, including SH, TH, and CK, while building the skills needed to spell short-vowel words, blends, plurals, and simple compound words. Each lesson builds on previous concepts, creating a strong foundation for future spelling success.
Letter tiles, dictation, and hands-on activities help your child connect sounds to letters and apply new concepts immediately. Rather than memorizing a weekly list and forgetting it days later, he learns the logic behind English spelling and gains tools he can apply to unfamiliar words.
The full-color Teacher's Manual provides lightly scripted lessons, built-in review, and helpful teaching tips, making instruction straightforward even for parents with little teaching experience. Lessons are designed to be completed in about 15–20 minutes a day, allowing steady progress without overwhelming your child.
Level 1 includes more than 200 pages of activities, review exercises, and dictation practice that reinforce each new concept. As your child learns to segment words, identify phonograms, and apply spelling rules, he develops stronger spelling, reading, and writing skills.

Great for remedial spelling instruction

My students have struggled hard with spelling, both my ADHD middle schooler who is a reluctant reader, and my advanced 4th-grader who reads like a house on fire. This curriculum has worked wonders in improving the spelling foundation for both of them. I really love how the book gives you a guide for working with older students who just need remedial instruction. We were able to quickly see which lessons we could skip, which we could go through quickly as review, and which covered 'rules' that they had not yet learned! They both found the cartoons babyish, but we were able to avoid most of them, due to working only with the advanced practice pages.

good foundational spelling

We started with another spelling program and switched to this AAS. I love it so much more for my kids because it actually teaches rules about figuring out how to spell words rather than just memorizing words themselves. It includes lots and lots of practice. The only thing I like to do differently is to add in fun elements with games as it's a little dry.

This has been the switch we needed

We were using Spelling You See and my 8 year old liked it at first but its pretty boring and I feel like it isn't really teaching the concepts about how to spell. Just memorization and dictation. He dreaded doing spelling and we are about 5 lessons in with this one and is really picking up the material very fast. I love the whole All About Reading and Spelling curriculum. Its great for kids with attention issues and enjoy multi sensory learning. I feel like this company really understands how children's minds work.

Great product, easy to use

This is a cool spelling program and my son enjoys it. It focuses on learning phonograms and sounding out words rather than just memorization, which I feel is more practical. It follows closely with the concepts from All About Reading, so everything flows well with the two programs. They recommend waiting until after level one of the reading to start this. That’s what we did and it helped that my son was already familiar with all the letter sounds and first few phonograms.

I have never been very strongly at spelling and was hesitant to teach spelling. However, this program is clear and really lays the foundation for spelling rules. I like the focus on learning the various sounds for each letter. My son is in first grade and has done excellent with this curriculum and spelling has clicked for him. I like how it is not overwhelming and a good amount to be covered in one school year.

My son has disphonetic dyslexia, and I'm catching him up in spelling. So we had to start with the beginning book. It was super easy to figure out where he was and find what he needed to do to catch up with this book. We moved through it quickly since he isn't actually beginning spelling. We just had to get caught up on some rules he missed in public school. So on to the next book.
