By Level 3, many children stop asking how to spell a word and start asking why it's spelled that way. All About Spelling Level 3 is designed for that stage, helping your child uncover the patterns, rules, and structures that make English spelling far more logical than it first appears.
Built on the same multisensory, Orton-Gillingham-based approach as previous levels, Level 3 teaches one new concept at a time while continuing to strengthen mastery through review, dictation, and hands-on practice. Your child learns how silent E influences spelling, how contractions are formed, how syllable types affect pronunciation, and how suffixes interact with base words.
Along the way, he'll tackle contractions such as can't, and they'll learn the C+le syllable pattern found in words like table, explore long-vowel patterns, and distinguish between commonly confused homophones such as dear and deer. Rather than memorizing isolated words, he learns the principles that explain why words are spelled the way they are.
Letter tiles, spelling analysis, dictation, and word-building activities help reinforce each new concept. The full-color Activity Book provides more than 200 pages of games, review activities, progress trackers, and reinforcement exercises designed to make practice both meaningful and engaging.
The Teacher's Manual includes lightly scripted lessons, teaching tips, and step-by-step guidance, making daily instruction easy to follow. Most families complete lessons in about 15–20 minutes, allowing steady progress without overwhelming their child.
As the rules, patterns, and exceptions begin connecting together, many children gain a new appreciation for language itself. Level 3 helps your child move beyond simply spelling words correctly and toward understanding how English spelling works.

How to Use All About Spelling Level 3
- Plan on about 15–20 minutes per lesson. Short, consistent lessons give your child time to absorb new concepts while keeping spelling manageable and enjoyable.
- Work through the lessons in order. Level 3 builds directly on the skills taught in previous levels, introducing more advanced spelling patterns, syllable concepts, contractions, suffixes, and homophones one step at a time.
- Keep the letter tiles nearby. Building and manipulating words remain important parts of instruction. The tiles help your child see patterns, test spelling choices, and better understand how words are constructed.
- Don't skip the review. Each lesson includes built-in practice to strengthen retention and help make previously learned concepts automatic.
- Complete the dictation exercises. Dictation gives your child an opportunity to apply new skills independently while reinforcing spelling accuracy, listening skills, and attention to detail.
- Use the activities and progress-tracking tools. The Activity Book includes games, posters, word banks, and other reinforcement activities that help make review more engaging while strengthening mastery.
- Follow your child's pace. Some concepts will come quickly, while others may require additional practice. Feel free to repeat activities or spend extra time reviewing before moving on.
- Pay attention to the questions your child starts asking. Level 3 is often where children become curious about why words are spelled the way they are. As the rules, patterns, and exceptions begin connecting together, spelling starts to feel less like memorization and more like a system that can be understood.

This app is not required if you purchased the Books Tiles and Box set, as it is a digital alternative to the physical Letter Tiles (already included with that set).
Yes, your children can share the material. However, each child will need their own Review Box with Divider Cards and for Spelling levels 1 - 4, each child will need their own Student Pack.

Great spelling curriculum

I can’t believe how well my son can spell! I really love how the curriculum is broken down by spelling rules rather than just memorizing lists of words like I did growing up. We use the full sentences at the end of the lessons instead of just single words for his “tests.” I prerecord the sentences in a PowerPoint so he can work independently while I work with my other child. I love that he can work on spelling and handwriting at the same time and he loves being able to work at his own pace independently.

My son is on level 3, and he and I absolutely love this program. It is super detailed, and very easy to understand and explain. It is filled with colorful, fun pages, and has a progress chart with stickers that gets kids excited to want to finish each lesson. I would highly recommend this program.

Amazing program

Been using AAS (and Reading) for 3 years now. We're currently up to the mid-way point in level 4 spelling. Super easy to teach, open and go lessons with little prep work on my part. The kids have thrived using it and I love that you just go at whatever pace is needed for each individual child. Highly recommend and we will continue using the spelling until the bitter end! I will say that with my oldest I was using both All About Spelling and Reading simultaneously and I found that to be too much together. The systems are so similar that 15-20 minutes of each thing was repetitive/ boring. Finally figured out that it worked better, for us, to focus on formal reading lessons and wait to start spelling later. We stopped formal reading lessons after level 2 and have mainly done spelling since then. Much of the same content is covered across the 2 courses. We've always used the physical tiles, but now that my kids have tablets and are older we will switch to the app next year and they're really excited to try that!

No daily prep!

There’s no daily prep involved with this! Just open and go! There is an initial prep you will do before starting but that’s a one time thing. We use the tiles app with it so it’s easy to use with no clean up. The teacher instructions are clear and simple to follow and I like that it’s not just lists of words to memorize.

All About Spelling 3

Level 3 of AAS builds well on what was covered in levels 1 and 2. There is a little review at the beginning to make sure all the previous phonograms and rules are still mastered. This spelling program is wonderful for kids that dislike spelling. It teaches the basics well and makes each lesson easy to understand. There is as much repetition as needed and a good amount of dictation for each lesson. We have used AAS for 6 years.
