First Language Lessons Level 3 expands grammar instruction by introducing sentence diagramming, dictionary skills, letter writing, and more advanced language work while continuing the short, structured lessons that made earlier levels successful.
Designed for students in grades 2–4, this year-long program is typically taught two to three times per week. It combines grammar instruction with narration, copywork, dictation, picture study, and oral language development.
Unlike earlier levels, Level 3 includes both a fully scripted Instructor Guide and a separate Student Workbook with more than 300 perforated, three-hole-punched pages ready for binder storage and everyday use.
Students build language skills through:
- Scripted grammar instruction with word-for-word teaching guidance
- Copywork and dictation exercises that reinforce writing accuracy
- Sentence diagramming and grammar analysis
- Dictionary skills and letter writing practice
- Narration, picture study, and oral language activities
Throughout the course, students strengthen grammar, sentence structure, writing mechanics, language usage, and communication skills through consistent spiral review and repeated practice.
Because lessons are scripted and concepts are revisited regularly, parents can adapt pacing, repeat lessons when needed, or adjust end units to match their student's readiness.

Should have stuck with this!

We switched to something different halfway through this book because my students where complaining about the repetitiveness... boy was that a mistake! In my quest to find something more "engaging" we got bogged down in overly flexible and creative programs and pretty much stalled out in the overwhelm of trying to plan elaborate tea parties to teach poetry! This may not be "exciting", but isn't wishy-washy, burdensome, or demanding. It teaches grammar in a super practical and approachable way, laying out lessons clearly for the instructor and student.

Overall, I feel like this curriculum is a little dry. HOWEVER, my son is learning from it! I like that the lessons are short and there is a lot of review, and he is constantly using earlier taught skills. Although it is a little dry, I will purchase the next level because he's learning!

I saw this book when we received it and cringed....BUT it is so simple to follow, short manageable lessons and great information. My son actually likes the little stories and poems sprinkled throughout and he seems to grasp the content pretty quickly and retain it!

Don’t let the size intimidate you

We both looked at this book and didn’t know what to think. He said ‘ugh I know this already’. Well, guess what? He didn’t! The instruction manual is perfect and word for word teaches. The workbook is just enough to teach but doesn’t go on forever. Really enjoy using this so far!

One of our favorites! As a mom teaching multiple kids, I love how easy FFL is to teach. I also love that the lessons are short and to the point. We have learned so much with this curriculum. We just completed the first poem memorization and the confidence it gave my daughter was so needed and awesome!

So easy to use

My daughter is not a strong reader or writer and so Language Arts can be a struggle for us. She easily becomes overwhelmed and loses focus. This program breaks each lesson down in such a way it is so manageable for her she now enjoys her language lessons which is such a relief for I think both her and I!

Easy way to start the day

First Language Lessons is a great way to start our school day. It’s not super exciting, but neither is it super difficult... it’s kind of a neutral way to start things off, if that makes sense. The script is easy to follow and extremely clear. It makes a good transition from breakfast or whatever because there’s no ambiguity or deep reasoning involved - I read the script, my daughter does her end of things, and then once we’re “warmed-up” with this assignment we can move onto other aspects of the curriculum that require more effort or critical thinking. I’m not saying this book is a gimme or fluff - I think it’s excellent - but it’s pretty cut and dried. We both enjoy it for that reason.
