Friendly Driver's Education
Most driver education courses focus on what to do behind the wheel. Friendly Driver's Education starts one step earlier by teaching your teen how a vehicle actually works.
Before covering intersections, freeways, and defensive driving, the course explains engines, transmissions, brakes, and other key systems. After all, it's a lot easier to respond to a warning light or recognize a problem when you understand what's happening under the hood.
Through 20 lessons and accompanying worksheets, your teen will learn practical driving skills alongside real-world topics such as vehicle maintenance, insurance, accident procedures, buying a car, and interacting safely with school buses and emergency vehicles. The focus isn't just on passing a driving test—it's on becoming a capable, informed driver.
Friendly Driver's Education also does a good job preparing teens for situations that don't show up on most written exams. What happens after a minor accident? What should you do if your battery dies? How do you shop for a vehicle without making an expensive mistake? Those questions get attention here, too.
While the course does not currently satisfy state driver's education requirements, it is commonly counted as one high school credit.
Prefer a different learning format? Friendly Driver's Education is also available as an audiobook and as a video license. In the video version, author Joey Hajda teaches the material step by step while your teen follows along in the text. The Family License includes unlimited household access with no expiration date, making it easy for younger siblings to use the course when their turn arrives.

How to Use Friendly Driver's Education
- Plan to complete about half a lesson each week if you'd like to spread the course across a full school year. Prefer to finish sooner? Completing one lesson per week will allow your teen to wrap up the course well before the end of the year.
- Begin with the vehicle systems lessons. Understanding how the ignition, battery, engine, transmission, and other major components work provides helpful context for everything that follows.
- As you move through the course, discuss the real-world driving scenarios together. Topics such as intersections, roundabouts, highways, construction zones, school buses, and emergency vehicles become easier to navigate when teens understand not just the rules but the reasoning behind them.
- Encourage your teen to complete all worksheet activities. They provide an opportunity to apply what he's learning and reinforce important concepts before he gets behind the wheel.
- Don't rush through the maintenance, insurance, and vehicle ownership sections. Knowing how to respond to a dead battery, a flat tire, a minor accident, or an insurance claim is part of becoming a capable driver.
- Check for understanding as you go. By the end of the course, your teen should be able to explain both how a vehicle operates and how to respond to common situations he is likely to encounter on the road.

Learning to drive is much more than just knowing how to maneuver a car down the street. Friendly Driver’s Education begins by teaching your child the science of how a car works. The reader begins at the key and ignition switch, continuing through the engine, transmission, and eventually out the tailpipe.
Once your child has an understanding of how your car runs, safe operation of a vehicle comes next. Navigating intersections, traffic lights, and tricky maneuvers such as roundabouts, one-way streets, and entering or exiting interstate highways are explored. Driving through construction zones, around school buses, or emergency vehicles is also discussed.
Friendly Driver’s Education also includes instructions for when your car breaks down or you have a minor collision. Car maintenance, automobile insurance, and advice on purchasing a vehicle round out the course. Once completed, your teenager will be well prepared to take licensing exams and become that safe, confident driver you wish him or her to be.
