Defenders: A king and 12 loyal soldiers start at the center of the board. Their mission is to escort the king to 1 of the 4 corner squares to secure his escape.
Attackers: A larger force of 24 soldiers is positioned around the edges, aiming to capture the king before he can flee.
In Hnefatafl, all pieces move like rooks—horizontally or vertically across any number of open squares. Capturing occurs by sandwiching an opponent's piece between 2 of your own, adding a unique strategic element to the gameplay.
