The other player? He oversees 24 relentless attackers determined to trap the king before he flees.
Every piece moves like a rook—straight lines only—and capturing happens by sandwiching your opponent's piece between two of yours. It's fast to learn, wildly replayable, and surprisingly addictive.

How to Use Hnefatafl
- Learn the basics together – One player helps the king escape from the center; the other tries to trap him. Simple rules, surprising strategy.
- Start a weekly Viking battle – Aim to play at least once a week (but good luck stopping at just one round).
- Switch roles often – Let each player try both sides—the king's clever escape or the attacker's sneaky trap.
- Encourage strategy talk – Ask your child what worked, what didn't, and how he'd outsmart a Viking next time.
- Repeat often – The more he plays, the sharper his thinking. Long live the king—or at least until next round!
