Online Course
Your teen loves watching movies—now he can step behind the camera and make one. Intro to Filmmaking: Classic is a full-year, 18-lesson, self-paced online course designed for middle and high school students and taught by experienced filmmakers who break the process into clear, manageable steps. Over approximately 120 hours—enough for one high school elective credit—students trace the evolution of film from its earliest days to modern blockbusters, learning how to tell compelling stories through visuals, sound, and editing.
Lessons cover directing, cinematography, lighting setups, sound design, camera angles, shot composition, and the basics of editing software. Students also learn the language of film, sharpen critical viewing skills, and understand what separates an amateur clip from a professional production. Each lesson combines video instruction with hands-on projects, a spiral-bound workbook for assignments and notes, quizzes to check understanding, “Fun Film Facts” for context, and film reports based on family-friendly movies you can stream or borrow from the library.
The course builds toward a final project where your teen writes, directs, and edits his own short film—then submits it for professional review. He can even enter it into a film festival for a chance at prizes and recognition. No expensive gear required—just a computer or smartphone, access to basic editing tools, and the drive to tell a story worth watching. By year’s end, he’ll have a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking and a polished short film to show for it.

You can choose your own movies to review if you don't have access to any of the suggested movies. There is a "Standard Film Report" in the back of the workbook that will work with any movie. There is also the option just to pick one or two of the movies and not watch them all, or you can simply skip that part of the course. The course publisher is not able to provide movie downloads because of copyright laws.
