Beyond Drill to Real Skills

Most parents know that a child who only memorizes math facts without really understanding math will find progressively complex concepts more and more difficult to understand. But what they erroneously think is that such problems arise about the time a child is memorizing the multiplication table. Not so. Unlike reading, an integral skill that is tightly woven throughout our entire day, math tends to be a more sporadic subject, essential when you need it and then easily set aside. That is why it is imperative that a child is able to reason his way through any mathematical problem.

Award-winning Mathematical Reasoning is a great place to start. With 236 pages of quick, straightforward problems to build mathematical reasoning skills in preschoolers, these highly motivational activities will take your child beyond mere drill work by using step-by-step, discussion-based problem solving. Concepts spiral gradually so that children do not forget as they go. The concepts are written to the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Non-reproducible.

Comprehensive

This is a really thorough and well-made math curriculum. My preschooler enjoys it for the most part, but sometimes just isn't into it. When that's the case, it is super easy to use the same lesson with hands-on materials around the house. This reassures me that she is learning what she needs to know in a systematic way.

Wonderful Book!

This book is awesome!!! Working through this book we got about 1/4 way before my son became extremely bored with the amount of repetition going in order. I decided to pull from the places he doesn't have 100 percent down and we are left with a bit less than half a book. If I had multiple children (littler ones), with knowing that my child becomes agitated once he is skilled in a particular area, I would have pulled apart this book in the beginning and made two separate books from all of the pages. The beginning and first half lays an immeasurable amount of knowledge that is followed by harder topic questions. *When he started to not want to do these sheets anymore -- I taped them underneath the table and we would build a fort to do math "upside down," made all the difference to get through the rest of the materials I wanted him to see.

Great knowledge upon knowledge building

I live how this book builds new knowledge on past knowledge! Worth having it.

A must have

This is the greatest tool for my four and a half year old. It's laying the foundations of mathematical skills. Colorful, fun pages really do make a difference. She actually enjoys her math work in this book. We tear out pages and do them together and she'll blow through eight pages at a time. I really like the pace of learning. It keeps her confidence up but still challenges her so that she doesn't get bored. I will definitely be looking for more homeschool tools from this company.

My boys LOVE this book.

I have a 4 1/2 year old and a 2 1/2 year old (who is a bit advanced mathematically) and they LOVED this book. The 4 year old sped through it with minimal trouble and the two year old could do about half of it. They LOVED the pattern practice and even the word problems (needed some help but towards the end of the book they were better at figuring it out.) Very pleases and almost ready to order the next book.
