Third grade is where math starts asking students to work with larger numbers, more steps, and increasingly complex relationships between concepts. Primary Mathematics 3 (2022 Edition) builds those skills while continuing to emphasize understanding rather than memorization.
Originally developed for Singapore’s Ministry of Education, this program uses a structured approach that encourages students to reason through problems, explain strategies, and apply mathematical thinking in new situations.
The program follows a Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract (CPA) progression. Students continue using hands-on materials and visual models while gradually relying more heavily on mathematical reasoning and symbolic work.
Grade 3 expands mathematical thinking through topics like:
- Place value and larger numbers
- Multiplication and division
- Fractions
- Time, measurement, and data
- Multi-step problem solving
Manipulatives remain useful but begin supporting increasingly abstract thinking. Fraction circles, linking cubes, counters, and base ten blocks help students visualize concepts while building stronger mental models. Other resources, like Additional Practice, provide opportunities for reinforcement, review, puzzles, and more challenging problem-solving.
Primary Mathematics 3 emphasizes reasoning, visual thinking, and mathematical relationships, so students spend less time memorizing procedures and more time learning when, why, and how different strategies work.
How to Use Primary Mathematics 3
- Aim to complete about 14 pages each week between the Student Book and the Additional Practice Book. This pace comfortably finishes the course during a standard school year while keeping lessons manageable.
- Use the Home Instructor Guide regularly if you prefer more structure. It provides lesson support, teaching notes, pacing suggestions, materials lists, visual aids, and answer keys so you can focus more on teaching and less on planning.
- Expect students to spend more time discussing strategies and explaining solutions. Third-grade math becomes increasingly multi-step, so talking through problems is often just as important as solving them.
- Keep manipulatives available when concepts become more abstract. Linking cubes, transparent counters, base-ten blocks, and fraction circles continue to help students build a stronger understanding as numbers and operations become more complex.
- Encourage your child to compare methods when possible. Many problems can be solved in more than one way, and Grade 3 is where students begin thinking more intentionally about which strategies work best.
- Slow down when needed. Primary Mathematics emphasizes mastery, so revisiting concepts is often more valuable than moving quickly through lessons.

Unlike the other tests, the placement tests for Primary Mathematics 2022 are set up to see if a student is ready to enter that grade level. So, for example, if a student successfully completes the 3A test, then they are likely ready, to begin with the material in 3A and should also take the 3B placement test to see if they are ready to begin with that material. As you know, several older versions of the very popular Singapore Math exist. The good news is that you can seamlessly switch from any other version to Primary Mathematics 2022. Primary Mathematics 2022 can be used with students of all abilities, but it is perfect for students who struggle with math. Its scope, pace, and review make it a much more manageable curriculum. Primary Mathematics 2022 covers math topics taught in U.S. public schools, so transitioning to any other U.S. curriculum should be straightforward.

Singapore Math programs are designed for use in a school setting, and in that context, you would undoubtedly need testing to track which of your 20-30 students were on track and which needed extra help. However, in the context of homeschooling, this becomes very obvious as you go through the work with your student. In addition, most families do not need either the extra work of testing or the cost of buying a test for their children in primary mathematics. Overtesting can build tedium and resentment for both the gifted student who wants to keep learning and the student who sees himself as not liking math and is now resigned to completing the same set of problems yet again. This math course is comprehensive and challenging, and we believe that students will be well-prepared for future levels without taking additional tests. Really, REALLY wanted to love this...

I thought we struggled with this our first year because we had been so used to a different style of maths instruction. But after trying both Kindergarten for my newest student and grade 4 after grade three, I'm just not happy with this... Below is my review of grade 4, which is equally applicable to grade 3 After reading "Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics" I was convinced that Singapore math was the way to go, but this just hasn't worked well for our family. The teachers manual does not feel like it was written for home educators, it is very detailed without actually being clear about how to teach a lesson, and I find more success just winging it with the books... though not much. This might be a great fit for some families, but we need something that has a clear, simple, straightforward plan. Pros: -Very attractive -lots of strategies taught for "outside the box" thinkers -All-inclusive Cons -Too many options presented at once -A lot of lessons present a concept leaning heavily on "outside the box" strategies, instead of keeping things simple -too much emphasis put on students understanding mathematical theory at a young age. Some students are ready for this, but many just don't have the critical thinking skill yet to make this sensible.

My daughters have been doing a spiral math program (I didn’t realize there was such a thing prior to last year) and the confusion was mounting. I bought this math and my daughters are both grasping it! They understand it, they are smiling and I’m overjoyed. It’s fun, it’s easily tackled but best of all, it builds slowly and is clear! I’m even learning concepts that I unconsciously knew, but now understand.
