Spelling You See - Level C
Many children can read a word correctly, yet still struggle to spell it from memory. Spelling You See Level C: Wild Tales helps bridge that gap by strengthening visual memory through short daily lessons built around fascinating nonfiction passages about animals.
Designed for students who already know basic phonics patterns and can spell many common words, Wild Tales expands spelling skills through repeated exposure to words in meaningful context. Rather than memorizing weekly lists, students learn to recognize and remember spelling patterns as they read, copy, chunk, and write real words from engaging passages.
Throughout the course, students encounter increasingly complex spelling concepts, including vowel and consonant chunks, silent letters, high-frequency words, and r-controlled vowels. The program's chunking activities help students identify common letter patterns, making unfamiliar words easier to recognize and spell.
Short daily lessons provide regular opportunities to strengthen spelling, handwriting, reading fluency, and visual processing skills. Students also complete dictation activities and participate in No Rule Day assignments that encourage creativity through writing and illustration.
The Instructor's Handbook provides lesson guidance, dictation material, answer keys, and teaching support, making implementation straightforward for parents. Lessons require minimal preparation and fit easily into a homeschool routine.
For families seeking a gentle, research-based spelling program, Spelling You See Level C offers a practical approach that helps students build confidence, develop stronger visual memory, and master increasingly complex spelling patterns through meaningful reading and writing experiences.

If spelling tests make you or your student panic, this is the curriculum for you. Each day is broken into steps and they encourage you to not spend more than 10 minutes on spelling each day. The topics make learning the spelling words fun. Doing the chunking is colorful and engaging.

After multiple years of using Spelling You See we continue to enjoy the 10 minute format, the variety of daily writing portions, and the learning about life that can happen while focusing on chunking. This year is all about animals which was a hit.

After teaching primary grades and using the typical spelling lists, this method of spelling has been a breath of fresh air (and, comparatively, a more positive result). Rather than just memorizing a list of selected words, my second grader is practicing words in context, finding "chunks" to help remember how to spell particular words, and mastering spelling in a much more organic way. Really appreciate this curriculum!

It clicks

This seems to be a great spelling curriculum for my youngest. No question. He enjoys chunking his vowels and consonants. It just clicks for him.

Better than memorization
Erin
We enjoyed the repetition and learning about the different animals the stories were about. Not only did her writing improve while her spelling did too, but the color chunking helped to solidify a lot of tricky spellings.

Seems to be working

My son seems to be learning how to spell using this curriculum. Each week he does very good on the dictation only missing 1-2 things. The following week, he does not make those same mistakes. So he is learning. But, the curriculum is not teaching enough new words per week so most of what my son is writing during the week is spelt incorrectly since his spelling curriculum has not yet covered it and he resents my gently correcting it. Now, my son is not going to tolerate spelling lists or a full on spelling curriculum with all those words, so this is the best option so far. However, I just wish it was a few more new words per week. My son is in 3rd grade doing level C, but I could see most other kids doing level C in 2nd grade. To build his vocabulary we added in Word a Day by Evan Moore so even if this spelling curriculum is going slow in learning words, at least his vocabulary will be growing appropriately.

We love spelling you see

These books are really good to help teach spelling and writing practice. My son has done great with it. The little stories are fun as well. We don’t do every page because it’s too much but when we skip every other it’s a good amount for my son.
