Test Prep: Grade 7
Standardized tests are easier when students know what to expect. Test Prep helps your child build familiarity with common test formats while strengthening the reading, language, and math skills often assessed on state and national exams.
Developed by Harcourt, this workbook provides targeted practice in reading comprehension, vocabulary, language skills, and mathematics. Students also learn practical test-taking strategies, including how to read directions carefully, manage time, eliminate unlikely answers, and approach different question types with confidence.
Clear instructions, manageable practice activities, and a full-length practice test help students become comfortable with the testing process while reinforcing important academic skills. Rather than overwhelming students with endless drills, the workbook focuses on helping them understand expectations and develop confidence.
Whether your state requires standardized testing or you simply want your child to gain experience with formal assessments, Test Prep provides a straightforward way to practice essential skills and become more comfortable with test-taking situations.
How to Use Test Prep
- Decide when to begin. Some families use Test Prep throughout the school year for extra practice, while others work through it during the weeks leading up to a standardized test. Either approach works well.
- Work in short, consistent sessions. Complete a few pages at a time, focusing on accuracy and understanding rather than speed. Younger students may benefit from shorter sessions, while older students may prefer to complete larger sections at once.
- Use mistakes as learning opportunities. If your child misses a question, take a moment to discuss the concept together. The goal is not simply to find the correct answer but to understand why it is correct.
- Introduce test-taking strategies naturally. Encourage your child to read directions carefully, check work when appropriate, and think through answer choices before responding. These habits build confidence and support success on many types of assessments.
- Save the full-length practice test until later in the book. It provides an opportunity to review skills, build familiarity with longer assessments, and identify any areas that may need additional practice.
- Most importantly, keep the experience positive. Test Prep is designed to strengthen academic skills and build confidence, helping students become more comfortable with testing situations while reinforcing concepts they are already learning.
Whether used throughout the year or during test preparation, this workbook provides practical practice that helps students approach assessments with greater confidence and readiness.

Good resource, but answer sheet does need a revision
Jana M.
We just finished using this workbook as part of a 7th grade non-religious kit provided to our student by a charter school. In preparation for state testing we had our child spend 2 weeks working through this book. Overall it was a good resource that provided opportunities to review and work on grade level skills. Our only frustration was with the practice "bubble answer" sheet included in the back of the book. On the last section of the answer sheet, Test 4 - Language, there is a misprint where 2 questions (4 & 5) have bubbles when they should be open ended and 2 other questions (6 & 7) were omitted completely.
