The Mystery of History: Volume I
The Mystery of History: Volume I isn’t your average dusty history book. This colorful hardback kicks off with Creation and winds all the way to the resurrection of Jesus—covering ancient civilizations from China to Rome, Assyria to the Americas. Written by homeschool mom Linda Hobar in a friendly, read-it-aloud style, this Christian history program boldly weaves biblical and world events into one rich, chronological tapestry. Your kids won’t just learn when David fought Goliath—they’ll also learn what was happening in Egypt, India, and China at the same time.
What makes this one shine? The scope. Your student will meet 108 fascinating figures and stories across 36 weeks, three lessons a week—with built-in pretests, reviews, and quizzes to keep everything on track (and no surprise gaps at the end of the year).
Even better, the included downloadable Companion Guide is packed with:
- Hands-on projects for all ages
- Research prompts for your older kids
- Memory card ideas, maps, quizzes, and book/video lists
- Timeline helps that’ll actually make timelines fun
This is Bible-centered learning that respects other cultures, connects dots across continents, and brings ancient history to life with jaw-dropping clarity. And yes, that includes amazing overlap like:
- Joshua and King Tut
- Daniel and Aesop
- Cleopatra and Herod the Great
No matter your child’s age—from first grade listeners to high school researchers—Mystery of History Volume I makes it possible to study together and learn as a family.
One beautifully bound book. One powerful download code. One unforgettable trip through time.

One difference between the two series is their target age. The Story of the World is primarily for elementary students, with Volume I recommended for 1st through 4th grade and Volume IV for 4th through 8th grade. The Mystery of History's reading level begins at about 4th or 5th grade in Volume I and progresses to 10th or 11th grade in Volume IV, although it is easily adaptable for multiple ages.
Another key difference is the religious perspective. The Story of the World aims to narrate from a neutral perspective. It covers major religious characters and historical events but does not endorse a particular religious view. The Mystery of History is written from a clearly Christian perspective and integrates biblical and church history into the text.
A minor difference between the two series is the student work involved. The Story of the World revolves around the narrative, so all activities, while engaging, are optional. The Mystery of History is also narrative-based but expects more student work. Nonetheless, it is highly adaptable to each student's age and family preferences.
