How to Use WriteShop I
- Plan to complete approximately one lesson every two weeks. With 16 lessons total, this pace allows students to finish the course comfortably within a traditional school year while giving them time to work through each stage of the writing process.
- Begin each lesson with the brainstorming activities. These prewriting exercises help students generate ideas, organize their thoughts, and develop a clear direction before drafting begins.
- Next, follow the lesson's step-by-step writing assignments. Students move through the writing process in manageable stages, learning how to develop ideas, organize content, and create effective first drafts.
- Once the draft is complete, use the Writing Skills Checklist to guide revision and editing. This is where many of the program's strongest lessons take place as students learn to identify weaknesses, strengthen word choice, improve sentence structure, and communicate more clearly.
- After revisions are complete, evaluate the final draft using the scoring tools and checklists provided in the Teacher's Manual. These resources make assessment straightforward and help students see their progress from lesson to lesson.

We have really been enjoying WriteShop level 1 this year. Whether the course is parent-led, or (as we chose to do this year) student-led, WriteShop is very well laid out and explained. The activities reinforce the type of writing required for that lesson. Everything from brainstorming to writing drafts to revisions to final copies is really well laid out. Being the oldest in a larger family, my son is doing this course independently. I will mark his drafts and final copies, but he has created a schedule for the program to finish by the end of the school year. Great curriculum!
