The Yoto Mini (2024 Edition) is a pocket-sized audio player for ages 3 and up that lets him choose what to listen to using physical cards. You decide what goes into his collection, and he gets to enjoy it independently. No camera, no microphone, no ads, and no endless scrolling.

Your child slips a card into the player, and the audio begins. Two chunky knobs let him adjust the volume or move between chapters, while a small pixel display shows simple icons. Even young children can manage the controls without help, and parents can adjust settings and manage content through the free Yoto app.

One of our favorite features is the ability to make your own audio cards. Free public-domain audiobooks, educational podcasts, foreign-language lessons, Bible stories, and other downloadable audio give parents plenty of material for creating custom cards. Yoto's online communities are also full of parents sharing ideas, playlists, and helpful resources. You can even record Dad reading a chapter book or Grandma sharing a family story. As long as the audio is compatible and you have permission to use it, a blank card can hold anything from a history lesson to a collection of bedtime favorites.

Start with nursery rhymes, animal stories, and simple songs for preschoolers, then add longer audiobooks, science podcasts, or foreign-language lessons as your child's interests develop. You can update the content on Make Your Own cards, so there's no need to purchase a new card every time he wants something different. The included Welcome Card doubles as your first Make Your Own card. Additional blank cards and prerecorded Yoto cards are sold separately.

The Mini is especially useful for car rides, flights, quiet afternoons, and bedtime. Once a card's audio has been downloaded over Wi-Fi, it plays without an internet connection. Load his favorites before leaving home, and he can choose what to hear throughout the trip. The built-in speaker works for everyday listening, while wired or Bluetooth headphones (not included) spare the rest of the family from hearing his favorite chapter for the fourth time. Live features, including Yoto Radio and Yoto Daily, still require Wi-Fi.

The 2024 Mini has 32GB of storage, enough for approximately 500 hours of downloaded audio. Its rechargeable battery provides up to 14 hours of use under Yoto's mixed-use testing conditions, although continuous listening will shorten that time. It also works as a Bluetooth speaker and offers sleep sounds and an OK-to-wake clock, with some clock functions requiring Wi-Fi.

The box includes the Yoto Mini, a USB charging cable, and the Welcome Card. Initial setup and new audio downloads require Wi-Fi, so take care of those before traveling. The player isn't waterproof, adults should handle charging, and its small speaker is better suited to personal listening than filling a large room.

One thing to know before ordering: Yoto released a newer 4th-generation Mini in 2026. Currently available in limited quantities and not yet offered through Timberdoodle (though it’s coming soon!), the new version will add water and dust resistance, twice the storage, faster Wi-Fi, and a button for accessing favorite audio without inserting a card. All of these extra features will come with a slightly higher price. For now, Timberdoodle carries the 2024 Edition, which plays Yoto Cards, works offline with downloaded audio, and doubles as a Bluetooth speaker—a feature that is still under development for the newer model.
