This was an interesting book for reading about flying creatures. My daughter loves birds and bugs, so it was perfect, but she didn't enjoy the note booking, some of which was repetitive in what it wanted you to write about and the experiments aren't always our favorites.

So glad I found this! I really love the immersion approach, I think it's especially important for science topics. Biology is a great subject for younger learners. I'm glad I can use this curriculum for all my kids, makes my life easier.

With COViD 19, I find myself schooling my 2 grandsons and 2 foster children.. ages 5, 7, 7, & 8 years old. We are doing the flying creatures of the fifth day curriculum. The beginning is a little advanced for this age group when it talks about zoologist's role in categorizing the animals they study but they learned the basic concept as we played a game/activity.. we took our collection of toy animals and place them on 2 pieces of paper taped together.. a blue and green paper representing land and water. The kids were zoologist's and categorized the animals to where their habitat was. (Pinterest idea). Once we got thru the very beginning, things have become much more interesting. I further teach concepts from the text with any ideas that I can think of that are hands on. We take things slow so new concepts can sink in. They each have their own binoculars to go with learning about the birds, they find and collect feathers and tell me what they have learned. For the most part, the text is simple enough for even the 5 year old to understand with the added hands on ideas and by taking it slow while exploring thru play on everything they learned from the text. The grades of the children I am working with are preschool, first and second graders but the second grader is in a special education classroom. I would highly recommend this text. An older student would not necessarily need further learning or activities added but we love this type of play as we learn so that is why we take things a little further. Yet, all the apologia texts that I own is awesome (I own quite a few since I originally homeschooled my children when they were in highschool)

My children completed this book and we've moved on to Zoology 2. These books are okay for a good general science introduction; however, the writing and organizing of information could be better and some of the information is slightly incorrect. I go through the chapter and make an outline of notes for my kids to fill in while they read. I've noticed that some of the information isn't well organized in an easy to follow order, it jumps around a little bit. This sometimes makes my note outline completely off from the book. I've also noticed that some of the information isn't entirely accurate. Also, there are instances in these books where there is so much detail in something mynute and little to no explanation of something that I think is important. It's also important to remember that these are written with a religious base. Overall, these books aren't bad, especially for younger students who don't need tons of details to remember.

Excellent!!! Nicely written! Excellent photography!!! Very informative and engaging-even to my child who is quite "squeamish" for many of the insects studied. Very well done!!!
