FAQ: Getting Started
“I’ve just decided to homeschool. Where should I start?”
How exciting that you are considering homeschooling! We offer full curriculum kits for all grade levels, or you are welcome to order individual items if you prefer. It’s also possible to customize our curriculum if you need to make adjustments for any reason. The kits come with parent/teacher handbooks and access to our customizable online scheduler.
As you are thinking through your options, here are a few articles that might be helpful to you:
“How do I enroll my kids in Timberdoodle?”
Timberdoodle is a curriculum provider, not a school, so our kits do not include enrollment. Many families homeschool independently as their own “private school,” while others homeschool under umbrella or charter schools. Homeschool regulations vary from state to state. A good place to find out what the procedure is in your state is to check the Homeschool Legal Defense Association website.
“What is the start date for homeschooling?”
As independent homeschoolers, you are welcome to start anytime you like. Our curriculum kits include a handbook and access to our online scheduler, which allows you to set your own schedule for the year. However, we recommend ordering your curriculum at least 2-3 weeks before you plan to start, as summer is our busiest season, and this will ensure you get your curriculum in time.
"Does Timberdoodle meet my state requirements for homeschooling?"
We've put together a State Requirements Chart showing what academic subjects each state requires for homeschooling and how that lines up with our Curriculum Kits.
"Are Timberdoodle kits accredited?"
Accreditation is really a term used for regulating schools instructing students, rather than the curriculum itself. So if we were overseeing the education of your children, checking their grades, etc. then we could pursue accreditation. However, Timberdoodle is not a school, but rather a curriculum supplier so we are not eligible to become accredited. To put it another way, your local school district is accredited, but not their textbooks.
“What level should I order?”
We offer placement tests for various subjects. This will help you determine the appropriate level for your child.
“My child is between levels. What should I order?”
Determining placement when your child is between levels is a little tricky. So then the question is whether to start with something a little bit hard and ease into it. Or to start with something too easy and race through it. We have had families be very successful with either approach. It is a matter of personal preference as to which you think would work best for your child.
“I’m still waiting on my order. Is there anything I can do to get started with school?”
There are a number of learning activities you could have your child do that could count as “school” while you wait for your curriculum to arrive. We’ve put together a list of suggestions for while you wait.
"What school supplies do I need?"
The simple answer is you wouldn't have to have much beyond your basic pencil and paper, maybe a pair of scissors and some glue or tape for most of our kits. Chances are you will likely find a few extra supplies that do come in handy, so we compiled a list to help you with your planning and back-to-school shopping.
“I just received my order. Where should I start?”
Your curriculum kit includes an Instructor’s Handbook. I would encourage you to start by reading through that. That also includes access to our online scheduler.
To activate your scheduler, you'll need to redeem the code on the back of your handbook.
All you have to do is head over to scheduler.timberdoodle.com and log in. If you haven't already created an account, you'll need to do so because it is separate from our regular site. Once logged in, if you don’t see your purchased curriculum kit listed, just click the Use Your Code link and enter your order number and code.
Additionally, here are a few blog posts that might be helpful to you as you get started:
“I’m always excited about the new kits and go for a custom big bundle but have difficulty getting through the material. Any suggestions?”
It can be crazy! Start with the basics—reading, math, and thinking skills—and fill in other subjects as time allows. Just know that a little crazy chaos as you get your rhythm is okay!
“What’s the most important advice you give to homeschooling parents?”
We suggest that you study your child and get to know his learning style and be prepared to make adjustments as you go. You’ll want a daily routine, but relax, be flexible, and have fun!
“What support does Timberdoodle offer throughout the year?”
We are here to help you year-round. You can contact us by email, live chat, phone, or on Facebook. During our summer busy season, email is probably going to be the most convenient way for us to answer your questions: customerservice@timberdoodle.com.
