Please note that all models can be built using the components included in the box. However, many of the sets can be made even more exciting and realistic by motorizing them or lighting them with the use of add-on sets! The manual also includes instructions for these upgrades, and there is a PDF guide just for those PLUS sets.
Timberdoodle does not carry the PLUS upgrade sets, but to help you locate them, we want to provide you with the part numbers for the sets that complement Universal 4:

  • Motor Set XS 505 281
  • Motor Set XM 505 282
  • LED Set 533 877

What Our Customers Have To Say

    Fun STEM activity

    Steph H.

Like some of the other reviewers mentioned, this is a little challenging for our second grader to do on his own. He tends to build either with his older brother or with me. He really enjoys building the vehicles. It is a fun "brain break" and great for practicing fine motor skills.

    Tiny pieces

    Tricia

While this definitely needed my help early on, my 2nd grader was able to do most parts independently within a few months. Unfortunately, that's about the time pieces started to go missing. The variety of models uses an incredible number of pieces, and unlike LEGO, most of them don't allow substitution. Since the kit isn't widely available in the US, replacement parts aren't easy to come by.

    A must have!

    Catherine

My almost 8 year old loves these kits. He has a big collection of building kits and this is by far one of his favorites.

    Difficult for 8 & 11 year olds

    Shell R.

I liked the idea of this but my 8 year old had a hard time putting the sets together because the pictures aren't very big or clear so it's hard to see which piece to use and where to put it. His 11 year old brother tried to help but he had a hard time with it also. I should've just stuck with Legos.

    takes forever to do

    Tabitha E.

My second grader struggled with this, but he is colorblind, so that might be part of the problem. I would suggest doing these as a time period(30 mins or an hour a week) instead of trying to get all the models done in one year. I found that some models were very easy and quick, and some took forever.

    Challenging

    Rachelle

Even though these are really neat. Each build needs a lot of guidance and help from parents. I even struggle with some of the steps.

Amazing kit but difficult for my second grader

    Brook M.

This kit is amazing and has so much to build! It was difficult for my second grader so we will hang on to it and get back out in a year or so and try again.

Really neat, questioning the age though

    Nicole S.

I really like this product but it's difficult for my 7-year-old. There at many many different pieces and too many of them are very similar so it's hard for my daughter to differentiate. Furthermore, she struggles to slide some of the pieces together without hurting her fingertips. This is not an independent activity for her. I feel like she'll get more out of it when she's closer to maybe 10 years.

Cool but a lot of work

    Aerie B.

These are awesome trucks that my son loves. It was difficult for him to do on his own though so I had to do most of the work. He’s 7 but there are so many tiny pieces and you have to make sure you have the exact piece with the exact shape and facing the right way. It’s very intricate and kind of exhausting. Once it’s finished though it’s a blast for my boy to play with and he’s so proud of what we were able to create.

    Great STEM activity

    Brittany T.

Some can take a bit of time for the kiddos to complete but it is a nice STEM challenge for active minds and can be used independently.
