The James Madison Critical Thinking Course teaches students how to evaluate arguments, analyze evidence, and think through complex problems—but it does so in a way that feels more like solving mysteries than completing a traditional logic course.
Throughout this 544-page program, students work alongside a fictional detective to investigate crime-themed cases. Each mystery introduces new critical-thinking skills as students sort facts from opinions, evaluate evidence, identify assumptions, spot ambiguity, and determine which conclusions are supported by the facts.
Topics include argument analysis, deductive and inductive reasoning, evidence evaluation, problem-solving, decision-making, and common logical fallacies. How to Use the James Madison Critical Thinking Course
- Hand your teen the book and explain that he'll be solving mysteries while learning critical-thinking skills. Each case introduces new concepts and challenges students to evaluate evidence, identify assumptions, spot logical fallacies, and determine which conclusions are supported by the facts.
- Plan on completing about 15–16 pages each week. At that pace, your student can finish the course within a typical school year while earning approximately one-half high school credit.
- Encourage your teen to work through the cases independently before discussing answers together. The goal isn't simply finding the correct solution but learning how to build conclusions based on evidence and sound reasoning.
- As new skills are introduced, look for opportunities to apply them outside the workbook. News articles, advertisements, social media posts, and everyday conversations provide plenty of chances to practice identifying assumptions, evaluating claims, and recognizing weak arguments.

Fun and challenging

My 17 yo loves this. The lessons are fairly short and provide alot of practice to help cement the concepts. Outside of classwork we have noticed he is applying the skills to everyday situations naturally. Highly recommend.

This can be challenging! But it is very interesting coming at it from the criminal investigation side. Of the 4 boys who have already taken this course 2 loved it, 2 hated it!! :)

My son wasn't a huge fan of this Critical Thinking Course. It is definitely challenging but I wouldn't say in a good way. More frustrating and once you know the answer a lot of times it still doesn't make sense.

WOW was I surprised by the challenge this gave my highschooler. I was expecting him to blow right through this curriculum..instead, he was engaged and stretching his knowledge with each assignment. Some were very challenging and he reached out for assistance, giving us a great opportunity to work together to solve the assignment. Very pleased with this thought-provoking curriculum and will use it again with my younger son when he's ready.

Good Book for Practicing Logic

This is a really good book for actually putting logic into practice through criminal investigation. I would have liked some more introductory help for me as the teacher, but overall, a really good "working" textbook!

Will use with all of my children

When I handed The James Madison Critical Thinking Course to my 11th grader, he groaned (loudly). He hadn't worked through a critical thinking course and I thought this seemed to be the most interesting option. I honestly can't say that it's his favorite subject, but he does it without complaint. He works through the lessons on his own and I find the grading to be a snap. When I asked for his critique he said that he likes the fact that the lessons can be completed in a short amount of time. He also mentioned that the lessons can get a bit repetitive, but I see this as a definate plus by helping to solidify the concepts. Overall, I'm very pleased with the scope of skills covered and will be using this with my younger children.

Great Critical Thinking Course

This critical thinking course is highly interesting. Court cases are reviewed by the student as they attempt to determine logical answers to questions asked. My students only complaint is that the answer key does not tell the outcome of the trial. A small flaw in an otherwise great program.
