Typing Instructor for Kids Gold
Many children are eager to use a computer but less enthusiastic about learning to type. Typing Instructor Gold for Kids turns keyboarding practice into an interactive adventure, helping children develop accurate typing skills through structured lessons, games, and personalized practice.
Set on the fictional Typer Island, the program guides children through five themed lands filled with more than 160 lessons, over 30 challenges, and hundreds of games, drills, and typing activities. As new skills are introduced, children practice them in short, engaging exercises that gradually build speed, accuracy, and confidence.
Parents can choose from 11 different typing plans, including an option that focuses entirely on instruction without games. Customizable speed goals, progress tracking, printable certificates, and detailed performance reports make it easy to monitor improvement while allowing each child to work at an appropriate pace.
The program follows national keyboarding standards and teaches proper finger placement, typing technique, and keyboard familiarity through a combination of guided instruction and repeated practice. Built-in rewards and unlockable activities help encourage consistent practice without distracting from the learning goals.
Typing Instructor Gold includes more than 140 learning activities, bilingual instruction in English and Spanish, and a variety of themed typing games that reinforce newly learned skills. Whether your child is learning the home row for the first time or working to improve speed and accuracy, the program adapts to a wide range of ability levels.
Most families appreciate the playful theme, though a few scenes include talking stones and mild spooky imagery that some parents may wish to preview.
By combining structured instruction with interactive practice, Typing Instructor Gold for Kids helps children build keyboarding skills that will benefit them throughout their school years and beyond.
How to Use Typing Instructor Gold for Kids
- Start by choosing the typing plan that best fits your child's age and experience. With 11 built-in options, it's easy to select a program that matches your family's learning style. If you're unsure where to begin, the Suggested Typing Plan provides a solid starting point.
- Set an initial words-per-minute (WPM) goal, knowing you can adjust it as your child's speed and confidence improve.
- Aim for three typing sessions each week. Short, consistent practice helps children develop accurate keyboarding habits without making typing feel like a chore.
- Let the program guide instruction. As your child works through lessons, games, and challenges, the built-in progress tracking highlights improvement in both speed and accuracy while keeping motivation high with certificates, rewards, and new areas to explore.
- As skills develop, encourage your child to continue progressing through Typer Island while completing the structured lessons. The adventure provides plenty of motivation, but consistent practice builds lasting keyboarding skills.

Not the right level
ScotFlower
Typing Instructor Gold for Kids probably is not the right level for my high functioning autistic son in 3rd grade. The timed games made typing way too stressful and set off anxiety. The timed nature of the games also lead to him taking his fingers off the keyboard and rushing around using only two fingers while staring at the keyboard in order to win the games (because winning at all costs not typing became the focus). This sort of defeated the whole purpose of the program in the first place because he was not learning how to type. I just found out there is a lower level of Typing Instructor for kids under 8 with a Disney theme, so we are going to try that one instead. I still think Typing Instructor is a great program and the games would be good typing challenges if your child did not cheat or have anxiety over them, but right now this version is not a good choice for my 3rd grader. We will come back to this later when my son is older.

My third grader was able to just pop this in and go! Not intimidating at all and very motivating!

Lessons move too fast
Sean P.
It’s really a mission to get this loaded onto a Mac (I don’t know why its in CD format when everything has moved online now) and the concept is great but the lessons just move way to fast. Before you have mastered the selected letters you already move onto the next lesson which includes even more letters, resulting in a very stressed and freaked out student as you cannot go back and redo previous lessons. A good concept but they should allow you the option to stay on a lesson until it is mastered. My daughter was in tears after the first 4 lessons and doesn’t want to continue.

The 90’s called...

This software is too ancient for this generation lol. Sorry to say but my kids couldn’t get passed the terrible animation and boringness. It’s been in a drawer after 2 tries...

ok...
Bryson
It's a good game, but after awhile it gets boring. This is probably best for younger children. J.B. age 12

Mac Typer Instructor for kids Gold
Mama o.
It is a great fit for my 10 year old. I feel like it is a little too hard for my just 6 year old. However, she is eager to learn and, therefore, continues to try. She does find it discouraging when she has to do the lesson repeatedly to get to the game. I’m most disappointed in how discouraged my 8 year old is by the program. He is a perfectionist and has become very put off by having to repeat the lessons.
