Plus-Plus Excursion is a hands-on building set that helps first graders develop creativity, spatial reasoning, problem-solving skills, and fine motor control through open-ended construction play. With more than 1,050 pieces, wheels, chassis, baseplates, and three detailed instruction manuals, this set provides enough materials for a full year of building challenges and creative exploration.
The unique Plus-Plus shape allows children to create both flat mosaics and sturdy three-dimensional models. Pieces connect easily, hold together well, and can be rearranged endlessly, making it simple for young builders to experiment, revise, and try new ideas.
One of the strengths of Plus-Plus Excursion is the balance between guided and independent building. The instruction manuals teach specific building techniques and models, while the open-ended pieces encourage children to apply those skills to their own creations. This combination helps develop both careful, step-by-step thinking and creative problem-solving.
As children build, they naturally strengthen hand-eye coordination, planning skills, perseverance, and visual-spatial awareness. Whether they're constructing vehicles, animals, buildings, or entirely original inventions, each project offers another opportunity to think, design, and create.
The set includes a wide variety of colors, including skin-tone pieces for more personalized creations. Families using a Timberdoodle First Grade Kit will also find 36 weeks of additional Plus-Plus activities and building ideas in the First Grade Handbook, providing even more opportunities for guided challenges and imaginative play.
How to Use Plus-Plus Excursion
- Plan on completing three builds each week. We recommend choosing two models from the 36-week Plus-Plus plan in your Timberdoodle First Grade Handbook and one model from the included guidebooks. Start with the Learn to Build guidebook before progressing to Learn to Build Vehicles and the more advanced building challenges.
- This combination of handbook projects and guidebook models gives your child opportunities to both follow instructions and apply newly learned techniques. Over time, many children begin adapting designs, combining ideas from multiple models, and creating original builds of their own.
- When assembling wheels and hubcaps for the first time, work carefully. Once these pieces snap together, they are difficult to separate. If your child prefers matching the guidebook colors exactly, adult assistance during the initial wheel assembly may prevent frustration later.
- One model in the Learn to Build Vehicles guidebook features a car, trailer, and motorcycle displayed together. While your kit includes enough pieces to build each vehicle, it does not include enough wheels to build all three simultaneously. Simply build and enjoy the models one at a time.
- As your child's confidence grows, encourage occasional original creations alongside the assigned models. The guided projects teach building techniques, while independent building gives your child an opportunity to apply those skills in new ways and strengthen creative problem-solving.

Great "on the go" Toy

We are often on the go for therapy appointments and this part of our Timberdoodle curriculum is a great piece to take along with us. It's great to use in waiting rooms to work on creatively (we bring it in a small tote box) or to work on while sitting in the trunk waiting on a sibling. The pieces fit together nicely and there are so many ideas of what to build as well as creative options available. A super flexible toy!

These small plastic pieces are pretty small. Definitely a choking hazard for those with young children. My kids 3.5, 8, and almost 14yo all love these! My almost 14 year old actually has a few of these sets already but when he seen these he mentioned that the dark gray color he hadn't seen before - and that the wheels were an awesome add! These easily connect together without falling apart. The plastic is nice and smooth, no sharp edges or broken plastic pieces - really well constructed. These are a must have in every home.

These are neat little building blocks. You can build 2d to 4 dimensional objects. The manuals are more visual than anything, but you are only limited by your own imagination. My 7 year old loves them. Even caught my 17 year old nephew playing with them as well.

My 6 year old will play with these for hours. We take some with us wherever we go, and I love watching how creative he is when he builds. I sometimes challenge him to build an object- using only so many blocks, or making it so tall- and he does his best!

so fun to build with

Our kiddos love this so much, we have this in a bucket on our table at all times and even our guests love to tinker with them. It's super fun for the adults too. We made flat mosaics with them as well!
