Kindergarten math should involve movement, sorting, counting, building, talking, and, occasionally, covering the table with counters. Primary Mathematics 2022 Kindergarten starts there.
Originally developed for Singapore’s Ministry of Education, this program builds mathematical reasoning through a carefully structured approach that helps children understand concepts before moving on to abstract problem-solving.
The program follows a Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract (CPA) progression. Children first work with hands-on materials, then visual models, and finally numbers and symbols. In Kindergarten, that means counting real objects, comparing quantities, building groups, talking through ideas, and exploring concepts before being expected to write answers independently.
Student books are colorful, consumable, and filled with counting activities, visual models, early problem solving, and age-appropriate activities that keep lessons moving in small, manageable pieces.
Additional resources like Mastery & Beyond and Additional Practice provide opportunities for reinforcement, review, or extra challenge depending on your child’s needs.
Instruction is guided through a Home Instructor Guide, which provides lesson support, materials lists, pacing suggestions, teaching tips, visual aids, and digital resources through McEduHub.
Kindergarten uses the hands-on materials more this year than later levels, but rather than requiring shelves full of specialized supplies, Timberdoodle focuses on the essentials, keeping hands-on learning practical without turning your home into a math storage unit.
Lessons typically begin with a real-world problem, move into guided instruction and practice, and then gradually build toward more independent work. Assessment guides, available separately, provide additional reviews, tests, and check-ins.
Primary Mathematics 2022 Kindergarten builds early number sense, problem-solving skills, and mathematical thinking so children learn that math is something to explore—not simply something to memorize.

Unlike the other tests, the placement tests for Primary Mathematics 2022 are set up to see if a student is ready to enter that grade level. So, for example, if a student successfully completes the 2A test, then they are likely ready, to begin with the material in 2A and should also take the 2B placement test to see if they are ready to begin with that material. If they do poorly on the 2B test, they could start with 2A. If they do well on the 2B test, they could take the 3A test to see if they are ready to learn that material.
