Kindergarten math should involve movement, sorting, counting, building, talking, and, occasionally, covering the table with counters. Primary Mathematics 2022 Kindergarten starts there.
Originally developed for Singapore’s Ministry of Education, this program builds mathematical reasoning through a carefully structured approach that helps children understand concepts before moving on to abstract problem-solving.
The program follows a Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract (CPA) progression. Children first work with hands-on materials, then visual models, and finally numbers and symbols. In Kindergarten, that means counting real objects, comparing quantities, building groups, talking through ideas, and exploring concepts before being expected to write answers independently.
Student books are colorful, consumable, and filled with counting activities, visual models, early problem solving, and age-appropriate activities that keep lessons moving in small, manageable pieces.
Additional resources like Mastery & Beyond and Additional Practice provide opportunities for reinforcement, review, or extra challenge depending on your child’s needs.
Instruction is guided through a Home Instructor Guide, which provides lesson support, materials lists, pacing suggestions, teaching tips, visual aids, and digital resources through McEduHub.
Kindergarten uses the hands-on materials more this year than later levels, but rather than requiring shelves full of specialized supplies, Timberdoodle focuses on the essentials, keeping hands-on learning practical without turning your home into a math storage unit.
Lessons typically begin with a real-world problem, move into guided instruction and practice, and then gradually build toward more independent work. Assessment guides, available separately, provide additional reviews, tests, and check-ins.
Primary Mathematics 2022 Kindergarten builds early number sense, problem-solving skills, and mathematical thinking so children learn that math is something to explore—not simply something to memorize.
How to Use Primary Mathematics K
- Aim to complete about 12 pages each week between the Student Book and the Additional Practice Book. This pace comfortably finishes the course during a standard school year while keeping lessons short and manageable.
- Use the Home Instructor Guide regularly. It provides lesson support, pacing suggestions, teaching notes, and clear guidance so you do not have to create lessons yourself.
- Keep manipulatives nearby. Kindergarten lessons often work best when children can count, sort, group, build, and move objects before moving into pictures and written work.
- Expect lessons to include discussion. Ask your child to explain what he notices, compare quantities, count aloud, and talk through problems before rushing to answers.
- Keep lessons short. Kindergarten math is designed to build gradually, so consistent practice often works better than longer sessions.
About the Manipulatives
What's the deal with all the math manipulatives? Great question—because there are a lot of them. Chips, clocks, spinners, scales, cubes, coins—you name it, Primary Mathematics 2022 probably calls for it. And yes, they're colorful, hands-on, and genuinely helpful for understanding tricky concepts.
Manipulatives make math click by showing ideas in action. They're especially powerful for visual and tactile learners, turning abstract concepts into "aha!" moments. That's why schools with space and deep pockets love this curriculum—it's designed for big shelves and big budgets.
But let's be real: in a homeschool setting, buying all the manipulatives would be a one-way ticket to cluttered cabinets and a budget breakdown. That's why we only stock the essentials—the ones that truly matter most for at-home learners.
Can you still make it work without every last piece? Absolutely. Grab real coins for money lessons. Use your old alarm clock to teach time. Snap together building bricks or pour rice in a measuring cup. Creative substitutes count!
Primary Mathematics 2022 follows a Concrete ➝ Pictorial ➝ Abstract teaching model, and many lessons show the manipulatives in pictures. So even without the full toolkit, your child will still build strong math skills—and maybe even have a little fun along the way.

Unlike the other tests, the placement tests for Primary Mathematics 2022 are set up to see if a student is ready to enter that grade level. So, for example, if a student successfully completes the 2A test, then they are likely ready, to begin with the material in 2A and should also take the 2B placement test to see if they are ready to begin with that material. If they do poorly on the 2B test, they could start with 2A. If they do well on the 2B test, they could take the 3A test to see if they are ready to learn that material.
We have opted to reduce our customers' costs by not including the Mathematics Assessment Guide in the packages we offer.
Singapore Math programs are designed for use in a school setting, and in that context, you would undoubtedly need testing to track which of your 20-30 students were on track and which needed extra help. However, in the context of homeschooling, this becomes very obvious as you go through the work with your student. In addition, most families do not need either the extra work of testing or the cost of buying a test for their children in primary mathematics. Overtesting can build tedium and resentment for both the gifted student who wants to keep learning and the student who sees himself as not liking math and is now resigned to completing the same set of problems yet again. This math course is comprehensive and challenging, and we believe that students will be well-prepared for future levels without taking additional tests. Also, additional online resources are available to you using the access code on the back of Your Home Instructor's book.
If you do find additional testing helpful for your family, the Mathematics Assessment Guides are available directly from the publisher.

I purchased it to help Hannah better understand the material she is learning at school, and I think I made the right choice. I really like that it offers a variety of content that helps build a better understanding of math concepts.

I really wanted to love this...
Elizabeth D.
My kindergartener has enjoyed this, it is bright and colorful and engaging. But it does tend to feel like a lot of "busy work", like it was intended for a large classroom and only slightly modified for home use. A concept will be introduced and you (the instructor) are then directed to give your student quite a bit of time to "explore the concept" independently. I find this a bit redundant for home schoolers because they "explore the concept" throughout their day and don't particularly need a full page telling them to! The students are then given a couple of pages showing how the problem is solved, a couple pages to do together with you, and then a couple of pages do do on their own. This also seems redundant because they are in kindergarten and many can't read and navigate worksheets on their own yet. Pros -colorful and engaging -provides more of a variety of tools and strategies for problem solving than most curriculums focusing on just one or two Cons -doesn't feel written for home schoolers -too many strategies offered -many redundancies

Love the color and simplicity!
Ryan T.
I’ve used Singapore for many years for my children when they are in Kindergarten, and I just love it. I love that the pages are colorful and very simple to use. There isn’t a lot of “fluff.” My ASD and ADHD children really thrive with this program because the lessons are short, but the colors make them interesting.

A great way to start
Stephanie E.
We've been moving through the K program quickly because it's very basic and my six year old seems to have a numbers/math way of thinking. The first few chapters are dealing with understanding numbers 1-10. Then there are several chapters dedicated to writing those numbers. I was worried my six year old would be bored but he still enjoys doing the workbook pages. They are colorful and varied enough to keep his attention. The parent/teacher guide is easy to use and extremely thorough. We will be continuing to use this program next year or possibly be buying grade 1 in the spring if he continues to zip through.

Really great math start
Nicole G.
I've started using this kit with my soon to be 4 year old. I really like how the student book is nice and colorful and starts out with very simple things for the child to write in the book, such as drawing lines to match items and drawing simple pictures and shapes before it moves into writing actual numbers. This is good for us because while my son is at or above the level of this kit with math concepts, he is not there when it comes to pencil grip and mark making yet. I also really like the parent/teacher guide. It's definitely written in a way that while it expects the parent to be very involved in the lessons, it does not assume that the parent is a teacher. This is good, because while I am a former teacher, elementary school math was not my subject area. Even if I don't follow the plans in the book exactly, just reading them gives me tips for ways to teach in the future if I need to supplement in some way.
