Quixo
At first glance, Quixo looks a little like tic-tac-toe. Then someone makes the first move, an entire row shifts, and suddenly the strategy gets a whole lot more interesting.
The goal is simple: be the first player to get five of your symbols in a row horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. But unlike tic-tac-toe, every move changes the board. On each turn, players remove a cube from the edge, mark it with their symbol, and slide it back into a new position, shifting an entire row or column in the process.
That single twist transforms Quixo into a game of planning, prediction, and adaptation. Just when you think you've lined up the winning move, your opponent may slide the board and change everything. Every turn requires players to think ahead, evaluate possibilities, and keep an eye on both offense and defense.
As players compete, they naturally strengthen logical reasoning, strategic thinking, spatial awareness, and problem-solving skills. The rules are easy to learn in just a few minutes, but the depth of play keeps students, teens, and adults engaged game after game.
Quixo plays well with two players and is equally enjoyable with teams. The elegant wooden board and pieces make it a game you'll be happy to leave on display, while the quick gameplay makes it easy to fit in "just one more round."
Simple to learn, challenging to master, and surprisingly addictive, Quixo is the kind of strategy game that keeps everyone thinking—and coming back for another match.
How to Use Quixo
- Set aside 15–20 minutes for a game once or twice a week. Quixo is quick to learn, quick to play, and easy to fit into a homeschool day, family game night, or afternoon brain break.
- Start with a few practice rounds so everyone understands how moving a single cube shifts an entire row or column. The rules are simple, but the strategy takes a game or two to appreciate.
- Play head-to-head with two players or divide into teams for a different challenge. As players gain experience, they'll begin thinking further ahead, spotting patterns, and anticipating their opponents' moves.
- Don't be surprised if one game turns into several. Quixo's constantly changing board means every round feels different, and rematches are almost inevitable.
- Consider leaving the game where it's easy to see and access. Games that stay visible tend to get played more often, and Quixo rewards repeated play as strategic thinking skills continue to grow.
Whether you're using it as a logic exercise, a family game-night favorite, or simply a fun way to spend time together, Quixo delivers plenty of strategic thinking in a compact, engaging package.

Review by Inside Our Normal:
”Quixo moves quickly and depending on the skill level of the players a game can be very short, usually 10-15 minutes, making it a great family game that people can easily swap out for each round, without taking up the whole afternoon. For our Outside the Box kids with short attention spans this is also a plus.”

”We all enjoyed playing Quixo. It might be intimidating for younger children, but I think ages 8 and up are sure to enjoy it. And younger children who enjoy planning ahead and strategy can also enjoy playing this game.”

”The wooden pieces are nicely polished and fit into the tray so well that it’s perfect for leaving out on a side table for a quick game whenever the notion strikes you. Out of the box, it’s a pretty decorative accent that might tempt kids to put down their phones for a minute to mess around with it.”

We enjoy this game, but I am finding it hard to get my son to think more complexly about game play. I wish there was a strategy guide to turn this into an actual curriculum.

Quixo is a high quality game that is easy to pick up and learn. My two younger kids figured it out quickly and enjoyed teaching mom and dad how to play. I love that Timberdoodle includes critical-thinking games in the elite kits!

This is a family favorite and is played at least a couple of times a week. High-quality wooden pieces and it doesn't have a weird smell. We will be trying their other products.

Simple rules, but lots of strategy
ScotFlower
This game had simple rules, but lots of strategy. I loved how the pieces were large and harder to lose. The best way I can describe the game is its the blend of the Labyrinth board game and tic tac toe. The way you win is you have to connect five in a row (like in the game connect four). Love playing it with my son!

This game looked so simple, almost boring, but once my kids start playing, it's hard for them to quite! A great game of strategy, I love how it engages their critical thinking skills.

My daughter and I love playing Quixo together once a week. Most of the time, I can still beat her, but sometimes she surprises me. This is a beautiful and timeless game. Highly recommend!

So fun!

This game is a huge hit in our house! My 13 year old son and I have been playing this a lot together. It’s like an amplified tic-tac-toe game, and it really makes you think. The wooden pieces are really well-made and add a nice aesthetic touch.
