Science in the Beginning is a Christian elementary science curriculum organized around the six days of creation. Through 90 hands-on lessons, your child will investigate topics such as light, weather, rocks, oceans, plants, animals, the human body, and the solar system while exploring the natural world through a biblical lens.
Organized around the creation account in Genesis, the course introduces scientific concepts through short, conversational lessons filled with colorful illustrations. Complex ideas are presented in an accessible way to elementary learners without sacrificing meaningful content.
Every lesson includes a hands-on activity or experiment. Your child might build a tornado in a bottle, model the solar system, explore how eyes detect light, investigate the rock cycle, or compare the characteristics of different animals. The experiments aren't extras tucked onto the end of the lesson—they're woven into the course, giving your child something to see, touch, test, and discuss nearly every day. Most activities use common household supplies, and an optional lab kit is available for families who prefer additional convenience.
Multi-age families will especially appreciate the three levels of review questions included with every lesson. Younger and older children can explore the same topic together while responding at a level that fits their age and ability.
Optional challenge assignments provide opportunities for deeper investigation, while included tests and answer keys offer additional assessment tools for families who want them.

How to Use Science in the Beginning
- Plan to complete two lessons each week if you want to focus on core instruction. At that pace, your family will cover the essential readings and experiments without feeling rushed.
- Watch for the red lessons listed in the table of contents. These enrichment assignments are optional and can be added when your child is especially interested in a topic. Completing them typically adds about two extra science sessions each month.
- Read the lesson together, discuss the review questions, and complete the hands-on activity. The experiments are designed to reinforce the concepts being taught, turning abstract ideas into something your child can observe and experience firsthand.
- Use the consumable notebook alongside the main text. Your child can record observations, document experiments, answer questions, and organize notes as he works through the course. Over the year, the notebook becomes a personal science record of everything he has learned and explored.
- For multi-age families, allow younger and older children to participate together as they respond to the review questions at their own levels. The built-in question sets make it easy to teach science as a family without creating separate lessons for each child.
- Follow your child's curiosity. Science in the Beginning provides a complete course, but the optional challenge lessons and experiments offer plenty of opportunities to dig deeper whenever a topic captures his interest.

Berean Science books are intended for elementary students in grades K-6. We include the five books in this series in our first- through fifth-grade Classic Curriculum Kits.
While there are some positives to working sequentially, families can also be successful beginning with whatever time period most interests them.
The publisher accommodates this by letting you know in the Helps & Hints book what concepts they expect students to know from a previous book in the series. If needed, you can do a quick encyclopedia look-up or internet search to help bridge any gaps.

Ended up a win

We struggled with this science at first because of the large number of lessons and experiments with each lesson. After I got a tip from an educator I know to YouTube videos of experiments that we could not do because of supplies or the weather in our part of the US, we began to fall in love with science. If you have multi-age kids this science is written beautifully for that. I liked the emphasis on the miracle of our world. I liked that it did not “talk down” to the student.

Best Science Ever!!!

When we first started homeschooling I had this dream of being that homeschool mom that did all these cool science experiments and getting the kids involved in the process a lot. I was never really able to do that... Until now! This book makes science so easy to set up, easy to understand, and makes a huge impact. Not only has this curriculum been a dream come true for myself, but both my kids love it and beg me to do more daily. On top of that it is great at discussing the Bible while doing it. This is an absolute must have for any homeschool classroom (or dinning room table 😉).

Too Advanced For First Grade

We have decided to stop using this book. My first grader is not enjoying it at all and science has become a chore for him. We are just about done with the first day of creation, and while I do appreciate it, my son has had enough of learning about light. He told me he wants to learn fun and interesting things, and learning about light and how it travels, bends, reflects, etc is just not interesting for him. I’ve had to re read things multiple times for him to get it. To be honest, I find myself being bored too

good for older students

This is great but for some reason, it's a lot for my littles to comprehend and there's a lot of going back and reading it. My 2nd and 3rd grader don't have a problem with this. I bought them the Evan and moore science workbook for them to do and we use science in the beginning here and there throughout the year.

Not for 1st grade

As a science teacher, I do admire this curriculum's rigor and hands on projects/activities. If I was in first grade, this would have been perfect for me and would have helped me greatly in my science career - I would have sponged all the facts up. However, I deeply question using this curriculum in first or second grade for non-science fanatic children. Why? Well, because the book covers all 7 days of creation and that premise forces them to cover all the science fields and practically the entire universe from the start to end of the book. That premise makes the book too exhaustive and too rigorous especially for first and second graders who are just trying to master writing, reading, and basic math. My kid excels in reading, but struggles in the other two so we have to do a lot of supplemental curriculum and activities. We just do not have time for a rigorous science curriculum with 3 experiment set ups a week. Yes some of the experiments are as easy as shine a flashlight in a mirror (so not all of them have a huge prep time), but if you want to finish this entire book, you need to do 3 lessons a week with those experiments/activities. Even as a science teacher, I was intimidated. Lastly, the book is not written in a fun engaging way. Its pretty bland which science focused kids will eat up, but those who are more ADD might get lost. I will most likely use this book in 3rd grade instead. I am going to pick up some Good & Beautiful units on Birds, Mammals, Geology, Arthropods, Ecology, etc. to use for 1st and 2nd grade. That is going to be a better fit for us for 1st and 2nd.

A lot of reading for a 6 year old

We received this in our 1st grade curriculum and tried it a couple of times. I do love the content but I feel it’s a lot for my 6 old to sit and listen and grasp. We tried some experiments and although they are fun I think we will put this aside until next year so she can better appreciate the reading portion along with the experiments.

This book is a lot of reading for my 6year old to sit and listen to so we mostly focus on the experiments. They are very fun and i love how the book relates them to the days of creation. Its very interesting to learn the science behind what God created. I have learned a lot of new things from this book and so has my son!

I geeked out about this Science curriculum. It has been so fun to teach my kids using Science in the Beginning this year. God's creation is so amazing and to learn how and why HE made certain things to work together the way they do... it is just a really great resource for Christian based homeschool! My 1st grader and preschooler were both very engaged for the lessons.

Science in the Beginning has a short, fairly simple experiment, then about a page and a half of reading. My second grader follows along, but my kindergartener doesn't pay much attention to the reading part. I really enjoyed Dr. J. L. While for my own science growing up, so I was excited to see his series for younger students. I definitely like the program.

I absolutely love this curriculum. I purchased this for my son's second grade science and we are enjoying it so much. I like that they give assignment options at the end of each lesson according to age. I'm learning right alongside my son and we are both having a blast! Totally recommend snatching up the science kit as well as it is so convenient to have most of the supplies you need on hand.
