Jump In
Jump In is a Christian creative writing curriculum that teaches middle schoolers how to write paragraphs, essays, reports, stories, and poetry through short, manageable daily lessons. With a friendly tone, playful illustrations, large print, and bite-sized assignments, it helps your child build writing skills without feeling overwhelmed.
Over the course of the program, your child will learn persuasive, expository, and descriptive writing, narration, and poetry. Each lesson builds on previous skills, guiding him from strong paragraphs to well-organized compositions. The included teacher's guide provides grading rubrics, proofreading instruction, checklists, and additional paragraph-writing practice, making it easy for parents to teach writing with confidence.
Written from a Christian perspective, Jump In includes writing prompts based on real-world topics. Some persuasive-writing assignments address subjects such as abortion and same-sex marriage. While these topics are presented thoughtfully and respectfully, parents may wish to preview the material before beginning the course.
By breaking writing into manageable steps, Jump In helps your child gain confidence, strengthen communication skills, and develop the habits needed for successful academic writing.
How to Use Jump In
- Jump In includes 198 lessons, but most families won't need to complete every assignment. For a balanced middle school writing schedule, we recommend skipping the Newspaper Article, Book Report, and Book Response units. That leaves 177 lessons—an ideal fit for a typical 180-day school year.
- Plan on completing one skill each school day. Some skills are designed to be finished in a single sitting, while others include a built-in multi-day schedule. When a lesson provides its own pacing, follow it rather than trying to complete everything at once.
- If your child enjoys writing and wants additional practice, add the optional writing plunges throughout the course. If he needs a lighter workload, the author's one-year plan reduces the program to 77 lessons while still covering the core writing instruction.
- As your child works through the program, he'll learn narration and poetry as well as persuasive, expository and descriptive writing. Steadily building confidence and independence as a writer.

Jump In is a really thorough writing curriculum. I like how it is broken up into daily skills as the student works through the book, practicing these skills before she begins a writing assignment on her own. There is A LOT of material in this book. We realized that she probably won't make it through the book this year, but she has learned a lot about creating a variety of writing projects.

Great Writing Curriculum!

I went through this Jump In curriculum with my daughter, who loves to write, and it taught her so much about writing. Now, I'm going through it with my son, who doesn't like writing, and I've seen so much improvement in his writing. I love how it takes you one baby step at a time through the different "Skills." It makes writing much more manageable for those of us who feel overwhelmed when told to write a paper. The book offers instruction on a wide variety of the different types of writing from persuasion papers to How-Tos. Currently, my son is learning how to write a report. I definitely think this is one of the better writing curriculums out there.

Prior to pulling my son from public school in 4th grade, he seriously struggled with writing. He could not get his ideas from his head down on paper, and he often became frustrated when it came time to complete ANY writing task. We are using this in our 2nd year of homeschooling in 6th grade and my son ENJOYS this curriculum. I love the way the assignments are broken down into manageable tasks, and he even says it has an element of humor in it. I'm so glad we went with this purchase!

My daughter had finished her writing curriculum for the year so we decide to just Jump In to this one! So far it is going great! We have mostly done a classical writing approach so she has had less traditional writing instruction. This is refreshing and introducing her to all the basics of writing. She doesn't put up a fuss, pages are clean and speak to the student, topics are kid appropriate, I say this is a win!
