First Language Lessons 4
First Language Lessons Level 4 is where grammar starts feeling less like a subject and more like a real-life skill. Instead of simply identifying nouns and circling verbs, your student begins building stronger sentences, sharpening writing skills, and developing the confidence to communicate clearly.
Designed primarily for grades 4–5, this year-long program meets two to three times each week and combines grammar instruction with narration, copywork, dictation, memory work, sentence diagramming, and written practice.
The fully scripted Instructor Guide gives you every prompt, example, and explanation needed to teach with confidence—no scrambling for explanations or wondering what comes next.
Unlike earlier levels, Level 4 increases the depth and complexity of grammar instruction while continuing to revisit concepts through spiral review, so skills stay fresh rather than disappearing three lessons later.
Students build language skills through:
- Scripted grammar instruction with guided teaching support
- Copywork and dictation that reinforce writing accuracy and mechanics
- Advanced sentence diagramming and grammar analysis
- Lessons covering conjunctions, demonstrative pronouns, verb types, and additional grammar concepts
- Dictionary skills, letter writing, narration, and oral language activities
The consumable Student Workbook includes more than 300 perforated, three-hole-punched pages that provide structured practice while keeping written work organized and easy to store.
As lessons progress, students move beyond memorizing grammar rules and begin applying them naturally in speaking and writing. That's when grammar starts paying off—not just during lessons, but everywhere else too.

The "Family Man" of curriculum!
Elizabeth D.
We were feeling bored with the same old, same old. We wanted something new and exciting!...what a mistake! Like a spouse dissatisfied with their partner and chasing after some young, hot thing, we realized our mistake! Young and hot is EXHAUSTING and leaves you feeling somehow wanting. That partner you "oh-so-casually" dumped at the wayside isn't boring, they are faithful, dependable,...emotionally available! And they don't require hours at the gym... er, Cricut machine for an optimum experience! Not offense to the "young, hot thing", they are someone's soul mate for sure! Just not ours.

Very thorough English curriculum
Jennifer C.
As an ELA major, I knew I wanted something that thoroughly covered English language arts in all aspects. This hit every mark! Children memorize classic poetry, learn punctuation and capitalization rules, and are taught many other facets of the English language. They did not always love it, especially my son. Lessons are largely auditorily lead by the teacher, and he struggled to pay attention. The lessons make sure to revisit and review concepts regularly to ensure mastery as well.

This is our core grammar text. Yes, it's repetitive. Yes, it's simple and plain. It's also quick, and thorough, and my daughter and I laugh at each other while we chant out the repetitive bits. It's too quick and simple to be boring much - it's straight to the point and done, and your kids will know their stuff. Also, we really enjoy the memory work poems. We love all Susan Wise Bauer's curriculum in our house, actually!

While I will say that the teacher manual is great, because it tells the teacher exactly what to say and ask, I cannot say that we love this one. My child is able to memorize some of the poems, which really surprised me and made me proud! but we cannot always deal with all the repeating of phrases, language rules, etc. We are sticking with it, because the child is learning, but Its kind of dull.

I like how it is loaded with content and instructs exactly what to say; but the lessons are dull for my not so enthused to learn 4th grader. The pages are loaded with text, no color or pictures.
