Science in the Age of Reason
Science in the Age of Reason explores the discoveries, ideas, and scientific advancements of the 1700s and early 1800s. Through more than 90 lessons, your child will study the people, experiments, and innovations that shaped science during a period marked by both remarkable discoveries and significant philosophical change.
Written from a Christian worldview, the course examines how different beliefs influenced the way scientists understood the natural world. As your child studies the scientific achievements of the Age of Reason, he'll also explore how worldview can shape the questions people ask, the conclusions they draw, and the way they interpret evidence.
Along the way, your child will investigate topics such as chemistry, astronomy, anatomy, weather, light, vision, classification, and conservation laws. Every lesson includes a hands-on activity designed to reinforce the concepts being studied. He might transform a bar of soap in the microwave, make paper from cotton fibers, observe sparks from a wintergreen mint, classify fingerprints, test for color blindness, or explore other phenomena that connect scientific ideas to real-world observation.
The colorful hardcover text presents complex topics through short, conversational lessons supported by engaging illustrations. Three levels of review questions at the end of each lesson allow younger and older children to learn together while responding at an age-appropriate level.
Parents and children use the same text, while the included Helps & Hints guide provides answers, explanations, and teaching support. Optional tests and answer keys are included for families who prefer formal assessment, and an optional lab kit simplifies preparation by supplying many of the harder-to-find experiment materials.
Science in the Age of Reason helps your child see science as more than a collection of facts and discoveries. By studying both scientific advances and the worldviews that influenced them, he gains a deeper appreciation for the relationship between faith, reason, and the study of God's creation.

How to Use Science in the Age of Reason
- Plan to complete two lessons each week if you want to focus on core instruction. At that pace, your family will cover the essential readings, discussions, and activities without feeling rushed.
- Watch for the red lessons listed in the table of contents. These enrichment assignments are optional and can be added when your child is especially interested in a topic. Completing them typically adds about two extra science sessions each month.
- Read the lesson together, discuss the review questions, and complete the hands-on activity. The experiments are designed to reinforce the concepts being studied while helping your child experience science as many Age of Reason scientists did—through observation, investigation, experimentation, and careful analysis.
- Use the consumable notebook alongside the main text. Your child can record observations, document experiments, answer questions, and organize notes as he works through the course. Over the course of the year, the notebook becomes a personal record of both his scientific investigations and his study of the Age of Reason.
- For multi-age families, allow younger and older children to participate together as they respond to the review questions at their own levels. The built-in question sets make it easy to teach science as a family without creating separate lessons for each child.
- Follow your child's curiosity. Science in the Age of Reason provides a complete course, but the optional lessons and historical investigations offer plenty of opportunities to explore topics more deeply whenever an idea captures his interest.
Ready to keep your little scientist’s thoughts, sketches, and “aha!” moments in one glorious place? The Student Notebooks for Science in the Age of Reason are tailor-made to help your child organize his discoveries as he explores the wonders of God’s creation—one bubbling experiment at a time.
Each notebook is matched to the corresponding Berean Science book and to your child’s learning level, so the layout is just right—whether your student is still practicing writing skills or tackling deeper scientific reflections. Inside, you’ll find the perfect balance of lined and unlined pages, spots to sketch, fill-in-the-blank fun, and even the occasional diagram. The challenge lessons? They come with blank pages to inspire a little extra brain flexing.
The Older Student Notebook is ideal for most 3rd and 4th graders who are confident writers and ready for more independent work. For curious minds in 5th or 6th grade who want to go deeper, the Oldest Student Notebook offers more thought-provoking questions to explore.
Younger students? They’re off the hook—questions for the youngest learners are typically answered out loud, so no notebook is needed.
Still unsure which level fits best? No problem! Each Berean Science book shows exactly what’s expected for Younger, Older, and Oldest students at the end of every lesson. Peek at a few samples and choose what suits your scientist-in-training.
Let those bright minds write, doodle, and record the glory of God’s world—one hands-on discovery at a time!

Berean Science books are intended for elementary students in grades K-6. We include the five books in this series in our first- through fifth-grade Classic Curriculum Kits.
While there are some positives to working sequentially, families can also be successful beginning with whatever time period most interests them.
The publisher accommodates this by letting you know in the Helps & Hints book what concepts they expect students to know from a previous book in the series. If needed, you can do a quick encyclopedia look-up or internet search to help bridge any gaps.

Too hard!!

This seemed WAY over my child’s head. It was also not very interesting. I’m science minded, and I didn’t enjoy it at all. My artsy child really hated it. We didn’t use it and got an Evan Moore book instead which was much better for her age. This seems like a curriculum for older students.

Awesome

This science book was amazing. My 4th grade boys loved all the experiments. It was so hands on, and the reading of the lessons was more than manageable for them to keep their interest. They loved telling their dad about what experiment they had done and what happened. I would recommend this to anyone that likes experiments. The supplies are mostly typical things you can buy at your local grocery store. Although, I would suggest getting the lab box.
