Science in the Industrial Age explores the discoveries, inventions, and scientific advances that transformed the world during the 1800s and early 1900s. Through more than 90 lessons, your child will study the people, ideas, and breakthroughs that shaped modern science while examining how scientists' beliefs influenced their interpretations of their discoveries.
Written from a Christian worldview, the course encourages children to think carefully about both scientific evidence and the assumptions people bring to it. As your child studies the Industrial Age, he'll see that scientists often looked at the same observations yet arrived at different conclusions based on their underlying beliefs.
Along the way, your child will investigate topics such as chemistry, electricity, geology, sound, human cells, thermodynamics, and microbiology. Every lesson includes a hands-on activity designed to reinforce the concepts being studied. He might model scientific principles with gumdrops, explore the discoveries of Louis Pasteur, investigate the work of Michael Faraday, make homemade ice cream while learning about thermodynamics, or conduct other experiments that connect scientific ideas to real-world experience.
The colorful hardcover text presents complex topics through short, conversational lessons supported by engaging illustrations. Three levels of review questions at the end of each lesson allow younger and older children to learn together while responding at an age-appropriate level.
Parents and children use the same text, while the included Helps & Hints guide provides answers, explanations, and teaching support. Optional tests and answer keys are included for families who prefer formal assessment, and an optional lab kit simplifies preparation by supplying many of the harder-to-find experiment materials.
Science in the Industrial Age helps your child understand not only what scientists discovered, but also how those discoveries influenced the modern world. Unlike anything else I've used

I love that this program focuses on people and works through time rather than subject. Each book covers so many different topics. I love how interesting each section in this book has been. I utilize a lot of resources in my homeschool and this one is definitely a 5 star winner!

Confession - I hate science. But love the chronological order of this and the questions and assignments are not overwhelming. Jump-started this because the grandkids are all here this summer; the seventh grader is doing the experiments for me (yes, she will be rewarded!). Personally I do not find it critical to do them at the same time as the reading - we will sometimes do two or three experiments in a day. The reading is interesting although names of the scientists are difficult to remember!
