Weekly Real-World Writing Grades 1-2
Writing becomes much more meaningful when children understand why people write. Weekly Real-World Writing Grades 1–2 introduces young writers to the kinds of writing they encounter in everyday life, from letters and invitations to reviews, directions, interviews, and persuasive pieces.
The workbook includes 24 weekly lessons, each built around a different real-world writing purpose. Every lesson begins with a parent overview, followed by a model example your child can study before beginning his own work. Graphic organizers help him organize his thoughts, while two scaffolded writing activities provide guided practice and build confidence. An extension activity encourages him to apply what he's learned beyond the page.
Throughout the course, your child will practice expressing ideas, providing information, explaining processes, investigating topics, evaluating options, and persuading an audience. Rather than relying on the same writing format repeatedly, the lessons expose him to a wide variety of writing styles and purposes.
Two simple rubrics are included to help you evaluate both formal and informal writing, providing clear expectations while encouraging growth. Because the focus is on original thought and communication, no answer key is included.
Whether writing a thank-you note, conducting a family interview, reviewing a favorite food, or creating directions for a task, your child will gain experience using writing as a practical tool for communicating ideas.
