Writing gets more interesting when it has a purpose. Weekly Real-World Writing Grades 5–6 moves beyond traditional writing exercises and gives your child practice with the kinds of writing people use every day.

Over 24 weekly units, your child will explore six common reasons for writing: self-expression, information, evaluation, inquiry, analysis, and persuasion. He'll write recipes, business letters, journal entries, media reviews, website content, and other practical pieces that help him think about audience, purpose, and effective communication.

Each lesson begins with a model example so your child can see the writing style in action. Graphic organizers help him plan and organize his ideas before moving into two scaffolded writing assignments that build confidence and skill. An extension activity encourages him to apply what he's learned in a meaningful way beyond the page.

The lessons are structured enough to support reluctant writers while leaving plenty of room for creativity and individual expression. Along the way, your child will strengthen his organization, clarity, voice, and ability to adapt his writing to different situations.

Two simple rubrics are included to help you evaluate both formal and informal writing. Because the focus is on original thought and communication, there is no answer key.
