Word Roots Level 1
Word Roots Level 1 helps students unlock the meaning of unfamiliar words by teaching the building blocks of the English language. Because so much of English vocabulary comes from Greek and Latin roots, understanding common prefixes, roots, and suffixes gives students powerful tools to improve vocabulary, spelling, reading comprehension, and writing.
This reproducible 249-page workbook covers 41 prefixes, 86 roots, 57 suffixes, and 295 vocabulary words. Through short, structured lessons, students learn how word parts work together to create meaning, allowing them to decode unfamiliar words rather than relying solely on memorization.
Activities include matching definitions, completing sentences, analyzing word parts, and applying newly learned vocabulary in context. As students progress through the workbook, they begin to recognize familiar roots appearing across subjects, from literature and history to science and standardized-test vocabulary.
The real value of studying word roots is that one lesson can pay off hundreds of times. When students understand that "bene" means good or "scrib" means write, they gain clues to the meanings of countless other words they encounter in future reading.
The workbook includes pretests, posttests, review sections, a reference dictionary of roots, teaching suggestions, and a complete answer key. The reproducible format also makes it easy to use with multiple students within the same family.
For students who are ready to move beyond memorizing vocabulary lists and start understanding how words are constructed, Word Roots Level 1 provides a practical foundation that supports stronger reading, writing, spelling, and lifelong vocabulary growth.

I think it's wonderful, but my kids don't love it.
Melissa H.
I have 2 boys that are working on this now. They usually dread it, but get it done. There have been multiple times that they have used what they have learned, but I think it just seems a little tedious to them. I think it is very important for understand language, and I believe it will be important in the future.

I wish I had found these books earlier, they have really helped close the gap in my daughters learning. She is reading better, spelling better, and her comprehension has sky rocketed. Well worth every penny spent and will be used for my younger kiddos as well!

Enjoyed
Heather J.
I let my child work on this book by herself and ask for help when needed. The book is well put together. My child is expanding her vocabulary and can use word roots to understand the meaning of new words she come across when reading.

Very challenging
Frances J.
My 7th grader finds this very challenging. To get through it, we work on page 1 of the lesson together and check to make sure the answers are correct then he works through the rest of the lesson using those answers. The hardest part for him is using the word in a sentence - he isn't understanding proper usage and/or some of the words are so unfamiliar that he can't come up with a sentence that it fits into.

Word roots
Hayes
Learning about words and where they come from can be helpful. This is great information but maybe a littttleee boring. Definitely helpful in inferring meaning of words that might otherwise be unknown.

A great addition to language arts
Kathleen W.
My kids are all voracious readers. My 3rd grader has finished our spelling program which goes through ninth grade so I was looking for something more to enrich her language arts. We are looking forward to digging into this.
