Word Roots Level 2 moves beyond introductory word study and into the vocabulary students encounter in increasingly challenging academic reading. As science texts, literature, history assignments, and standardized tests introduce more sophisticated language, this workbook teaches students how to break unfamiliar words into recognizable parts and use those clues to determine meaning.
Across 256 reproducible pages, students work with 28 prefixes, 109 roots, 86 suffixes, and 312 vocabulary words. Rather than memorizing isolated definitions, they learn how word parts combine to create meaning, giving them a practical system for decoding new vocabulary independently.
Lessons include matching definitions, completing sentences, analyzing roots and affixes, defining word parts, and writing original sentences using newly learned vocabulary. Optional creative-writing activities provide additional opportunities to apply the words in context and strengthen retention.
As students progress through the workbook, many begin noticing familiar roots appearing across subjects. A challenging science term, an unfamiliar word in a novel, or a difficult test question becomes less intimidating when students recognize pieces of the word and can use them to make informed predictions about meaning.

How to Use Word Roots Level 2
- Begin with Lesson 1 and work through the workbook in order. Most families find that completing one to two lessons or review sections each week provides a comfortable pace while allowing students time to absorb and apply new vocabulary.
- Each lesson introduces new roots, prefixes, and suffixes before asking students to use them in a variety of ways. Activities include matching definitions, completing sentences, analyzing word parts, and occasionally applying vocabulary through writing exercises.
- The review sections are an important part of the program. Rather than continually introducing new material, they give students opportunities to revisit previously learned word elements and strengthen long-term retention.
- Consider using the pretest at the beginning and the posttest at the end of the course. Students are often surprised by how much their vocabulary knowledge and word-analysis skills improve over the year.
- Keep the answer key nearby for quick reference and easy grading. The goal is not simply to get every answer correct but to help students understand how word parts contribute to meaning.
- As students progress through the workbook, encourage them to watch for familiar roots in their everyday reading. Many begin to notice that words that once seemed difficult are suddenly much easier to decode because they recognize the building blocks hidden within them.

This workbook is jam-packed with information and really goes in-depth with words. It is a great supplement for those that need a little more practice with vocabulary. It really helps with spelling as well. It’s just a great supplement all around. It can feel a little overwhelming, but even a page a day will really help build language skills.

This year was the first year I've done any kind of word roots curriculum. It has been pretty neat learning where words come from & I have learned a lot of new words this year. At the end of each lesson you have to make up your own sentences with the words for the week and that's pretty fun & funny sometimes.
