A Reason for Handwriting: Level C
If your third grader is going to spend time practicing handwriting, why not make it meaningful? A Reason for Handwriting: Level C introduces cursive, then pairs daily practice with a weekly Scripture verse across the rest of the school year.
The worktext begins with 27 daily lessons that walk your child through basic cursive letter formation—strokes, shapes, and the connectors that turn letters into flowing words. From there, it shifts into 32 weeks of Scripture-based practice. The first three days of each week, your child writes letters and words from the week's verse. On day 4, he traces the full verse as it appears in the worktext. On day 5, he chooses a Border Sheet from the back of the book, copies the verse onto it in his best cursive, and colors the artwork around it.
Most lessons take 10–15 minutes. Scripture verses come from the Living Bible paraphrase.
If your child is new to cursive or needs more time bridging manuscript and cursive, the Transition Book (Level T) is designed to replace either Level B or Level C, giving you flexibility to tailor the sequence to your child's readiness.

How to Use A Reason for Handwriting: Level C
- Start with the 27 cursive introduction lessons. These daily lessons walk your child through basic cursive letter formation before the Scripture-based work begins.
- Move into the 32 weeks of weekly lessons. Each week follows a 5-day rhythm built around one Scripture verse.
- Days 1–3: Your child writes letters and words from the week's verse.
- Day 4: He traces the full verse as it appears in the worktext.
- Day 5: He chooses a Border Sheet from the back of the book, copies the verse onto it in his best cursive, and colors the artwork around it.
- Keep daily lessons to 10–15 minutes. Short, consistent practice works well for third-grade attention spans.
- Share or display the finished Border Sheets. A completed verse on the fridge or sent to a grandparent gives your child a reason to do his best work.

Verses are taken from the New Testament Epistles. Does NOT include transition or manuscript lessons.
NOTE: The Transition Book will replace either book B or C. The Transition Book includes extra exercises for both manuscript and cursive. If your second-grader is ready for cursive, then you should use The Transition Book and follow it with book C. If your third-grader needs more work on manuscript before tackling cursive, use The Transition Book, and then follow with book D.

This program worked better and produced more readable results than Getty-Dubay and Handwriting Without Tears for both my 2 right handed and my 2 left handed children.

I agree that A Reason for Writing would not be enough remedial instruction for a struggling student, but the Christian content and the digestible, repetitious, nature of the simple program has its merits. I use this with another support program for my struggling student, but it is quite sufficient for my typical students.

Excellent handwriting program!

Excellent handwriting program! Each child works on memorizing and writing out one verse each week. The handwriting practice is divided by four days. By the end of the week the student should be able to write out the verse in its entirety. I like this program because my son can work on it on his own and it is not overwhelming.

So straightforward in teaching

We started using this from the very beginning. It is so straightforward in teaching printing and then transitioning to cursive, that my children wanted to do more than the necessary amount for the day. I love the Bible verses it reinforces and the kids love the illustrated characters that show up throughout the books.

Dramatic improvement upon use!

I trusted Karen Andreola's review of Getty-Dubay Italic in the CBD catalog, but when my 8th and 6th graders still couldn't READ cursive, and couldn't read their own italic, I knew something was lacking. Because I've never been dissatisfied with a recommendation from Timberdoodle, I took their advice and switched to A Reason... Within a week both were dramatically improved. I've used this for three years now with my seven children. (It should be noted in the catalog that the Transition book contains all of the exercises/material found in Book B)

A perfect way to work on penmanship!

This program was recommended to us and we loved it! My girls were able to learn cursive painlessly. What surprised me most was how much they enjoyed doing the copywork of bible verses. They would always put their best effort into their handwriting, color the pictures on the paper provided, and have it ready for when their Daddy came home from work. It definitely put a smile on his face and some warmth in his heart. What a perfect way to work on having beautiful penmenship!
