Level 3
Students will advance to new heights in their reading abilities with All About Reading Level 3. Adding onto the skills learned in prior levels, students will learn 16 new phonograms, including OA, IGH, KN, and others. Hands-on activities continue to provide a tactile way to review and learn words. At the same time, the exciting 25 integrated, decodable stories help increase comprehension. Chapters in Level 3 are a bit longer, allowing plots to become more detailed and nuanced while remaining humorous and wholesome as in earlier levels. By the completion of All About Reading Level 3, many students are ready to graduate from phonics instruction to a traditional reading course. Others will advance to Level 4 to finish learning all the phonics needed to decode just about any word.
All About Reading
All About Reading (AAR) is the multisensory, mastery-based program you’ve heard about. Suitable for all ages and with activities that benefit all learning styles, AAR teaches phonics, decoding, fluency, and comprehension in a fun and engaging way. Moving at a gentler pace than other more intense reading programs, with AAR, only one new concept is taught at a time. Their precept-upon-precept program works with all kids, and AAR’s built-in review system helps the learning stick.
Based on the Orton-Gillingham Approach, 97% of English words can be learned according to phonetic rules, leaving only 3% as sight words. The progressive introduction of letters introduces vowels with consonants in a way that will allow your child to begin reading almost immediately. We particularly like how AAR integrates phonics instruction and phonics readers into a single comprehensive program, so they correlate directly with each other.
And you will be thrilled to know that no prior training is needed. AAR has lightly scripted and illustrated “open and go” lessons that make your job easy and stress-free. Lessons are taught in short, manageable chunks. The author recommends students spend no more than 20 minutes a day learning to read, plus another 20 listening to a read-aloud.
The student activity books add variety to the lessons and provide additional support. The phonetic readers are the best we have ever seen – beautifully illustrated hardcover books with finely detailed full-color drawings. The complete AAR program consists of five levels, from PreK through third grade.

View PDFAll About Reading Level 3 has lightly scripted and illustrated "open and go" lessons that make your job easy and stress-free! Often, you will need to put in a small amount of prep work, such as cutting apart flashcards, preparing a game, etc. AAR 3 includes 54 lessons. Complete 20 minutes of AAR per day, picking up the next day where you left off previously.
All you need for the next level with that student is the Student & Teacher Materials. We have additional options for families who use All About Reading with more than one student.
The Letter Tiles app is not included, but you can purchase it for your compatible iPad, Android tablet, or Amazon Fire in your device's store. Don't forget that this app is not required if you purchase the Deluxe Set; it is a digital alternative to the physical Letter Tiles that are included!
Both students can share! If you prefer to have both children complete all tile activities simultaneously, you may wish to purchase an additional set. However, this is not required.
Either can be a great option. All About Reading Level 4 teaches students how to decode words that use less-common English spellings and pronunciations. For example, some of the words covered are juice, gnat, beige, daughter, comb, journey, rough, and rhyme. Level 4 also teaches how to decode words with various suffixes and those influenced by other languages. If your student would benefit from clear instruction on how to decode unusual or complicated words, then Level 4 is an ideal option.
On the other hand, many students who have mastered Level 3 are already picking up these words in the context of everyday reading. A better next step for these students can be to diversify their reading through a literature program. For that reason, Mosdos Opal is our typical recommendation for the next step after Level 3.

What will my student learn in Level 3?
Your student will learn exciting new concepts, including the jobs of Silent E, new phonograms, and methods for decoding multisyllable words – and continue to establish a firm foundation for a lifetime of learning. Every component of reading is taught: decoding (phonics and structural analysis), vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Below is a sampling in each area.
Learn phonograms AI, AY, OA, IR, UR, OO, EA, IGH, TCH, DGE, EW, WR, KN, EIGH, OE, and TI, and read words containing the new phonograms; such as paint, play, boat, third, purple, soon, mean, light, match, budge, flew, wrong, know, sleigh, toe, and action. Also read words with Pickle syllables, as in bubble and table.
Identify base words; read words with vowel suffixes, as in fastest, and consonant suffixes, as in gladly; read words with prefixes, as in mistake, and learn syllable division rules for reading multi-syllable words.
Discuss new words in the context of the story and one’s own life, and understand homophones, synonyms, antonyms, onomatopoeia, alliteration, similes, idioms, and personification.
Read with accuracy, meaningful expression, and natural phrasing.
Connect text to one's own experiences, make predictions, compare and contrast main characters, and skim for specific information.
