Written by Jessie Wise of Well-Trained Mind Press, this year-long program uses fully scripted instruction to guide parents through lessons covering grammar, narration, copywork, dictation, picture study, and language development.
Because there is no separate student workbook, students complete activities on lined paper while the teacher guide provides everything needed for instruction—keeping preparation simple and lessons easy to implement.

Excellent follow-up to FLL 1

One of the things I love about FLL is that you can use them synchronously, but you can also jump right into whichever level is appropriate for your child's age. Skills learned in level 1 are repeated in level 2, but in fewer lessons and with less repetition before moving on to new material. Two types of students particularly benefit from this: Kids who may not have fully internalized some things in level 1, but don't need a full repeat of the material, and slightly older students who haven't studied grammar previously. The review for one student is an adequate introduction for another, without making things too babyish or redundant for either.

We started this in first grade when my son was still 5, he's advanced in reading and I wasn't sure where to start him in language arts. This turned out to be a great fit. It's very easy to use with no prep. The lessons are very short, they usually take us 10 minutes. The method works great and my son is definitely learning the material well. However I will say that I'm considering trying something else next time just to see if I can find something a little more exciting. My son actually seems to really enjoy learning grammar, and he enjoys this book for the most part but sometimes the memorizing gets a little old. But I know it's a great way to learn so I may still just stick with this one.

This builds on the concepts of the first one. If you didn't use the first level don't worry. It is not so complex that your child will be lost. It is set up with reviews and new concepts.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book! Learning nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc. can be confusing for anyone, and trying to keep everything straight can be frustrating at times. This book breaks it all down into easy lessons, has catchy definitions, and incorporates the use of fun stories to help the student learn language.

I was delightfully surprised with how much my son liked First Language Lessons. I thought it was great, but wasn't sure what he thought about it. A couple weeks into the school year, I pulled out the First Language Lessons book and he said, "YES! I LOVE this one!!!" We are still working through it as we have about 5 months left of school...but so far, NO COMPLAINTS! I highly recommend this for teaching your child the foundational language arts information!

My son & I both disliked this so much that we stopped after 2 weeks & I found a different textbook. I felt like this book wanted to make things interesting for the student but in doing so lost clarity.

This came recommend by other families. I have found it a very gentle way of approaching language with my son. Its repetitive nature can be a little annoying at times to my son, but it seems to be working! Lessons are short and it's very open and go.

This was a little too repetitive for my child, but the exercises were good at getting her to understand the different parts of speech and such. We just worked around the repetitive factor by skipping a few lessons, here and there, if we'd already covered the material.
