Most language programs expect learners to figure out the language as they go. Fluenz Homeschool takes a different approach, combining direct instruction, interactive practice, and progress tracking to help your teen develop practical skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and pronunciation.
Rather than relying on memorization or immersion alone, Fluenz uses instructor-led lessons that explain grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, and language patterns step by step. Video tutors guide learners through each concept, while conversations with native speakers help reinforce real-world usage and listening comprehension.
Interactive exercises provide immediate practice and feedback, helping new concepts move from recognition to mastery. As lessons build on one another, learners develop a stronger understanding of how the language functions rather than simply memorizing isolated phrases.
The homeschool edition includes a customizable parent dashboard that supports up to three learners. Parents can monitor progress, view completed lessons, track time spent learning, and identify areas that may need additional review.
Because Fluenz syncs across desktop computers, iPhones, iPads, and Android devices, learning can continue wherever it's most convenient. Progress automatically carries over between devices, making it easy to maintain consistency.

Each language includes five levels.
- Levels 1 & 2 → Spanish/Italian/Portuguese/German/French/Mandarin 1 (High School Year 1)
- Levels 3–5 → Spanish/Italian/Portuguese/German/French/Mandarin 2+ (High School Year 2 and beyond)
Fluenz can be used for students ages 7 and up. However, we feel it is best suited for about age 12 or older due to the writing component.
Fluenz and Rosetta Stone are both excellent language-learning programs! We heartily recommend both, but which is best for your student varies based on your needs and situation.
Rosetta Stone is suitable for about age 6+. Fluenz, on the other hand, is better for about age 12+. Fluenz relies more heavily on writing, uses fewer images, and overall requires more attention and motivation.
Rosetta Stone teaches by immersion, which is how people naturally learn their first language. Fluenz teaches very differently, with lots of explanation. Older people learn differently than toddlers, and Fluenz can be less frustrating for teens and adults. The ample explanations provided by Fluenz help minimize the frustration and confusion that can come with learning a new language.
Rosetta Stone has exercises that can be accomplished in comparatively small bites. Fluenz teaches with video instruction followed by exercises, so it is less suited for studying in smaller chunks.
In sum, if your student is young or has a shorter attention span, Rosetta Stone is likely more suitable. On the other hand, if you have an older student who is eager to gain functional language skills, Fluenz would be our top choice.
Fluenz is currently available as a web version accessible via computer or laptop through browsers such as Google Chrome or Safari. It's essential to note that this version requires complete internet access as it operates solely through streaming.
Additionally, there are Native Mobile Apps for both iOS and Android that require an internet connection for login and progress synchronization between devices. These apps, however, provide the valuable feature of downloading sessions for subsequent offline use. Please note that progress synchronization with other devices will only occur once the device is back online.
To enhance the app experience, we recommend that users download each session individually. This helps minimize potential network interruptions and improves navigation.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to download sessions:
- 1Go to the language menu and select your level.
- 2Tap the down-arrow icon for the session you wish to access and wait for it to download. A loading icon and red bar below indicate the progress.
- 3Once the download is complete, a green down-arrow will appear, signifying that the session is ready to use and has been successfully downloaded to your device.
- 4Furthermore, we advise visiting "My Downloads" and removing completed lessons to efficiently manage your device's storage.

I bought this and a family membership to Duolingo at the beginning of the 2022 school year. Fluenz is extremely difficult to navigate. I truly don't know where to go next to make the most of the program. It needs a schedule. Fluenz also has no mercy. If I spelled something wrong, it will just keep telling me I'm wrong. Until I get it right I can't move on. It never helps me with it; I'm just stuck. Lots of improvement needed. I didn't get too far into Fluenz. We tended to prefer Duolingo. However, Duolingo is very "woke", and I would like to find a program that isn't.

We're only 1/4 way through our first year with Fluenz, but we're very happy with the program so far. I like that there are a variety of native speakers. The visuals are stunning but static. My only complaint is that progress is lost if the entire lesson is not completed.

We were excited to receive the Fluenz email and have access so quickly! We had all three of our sons watch the first couple video clips (ages 6, 9, 11) and they enjoyed it. They are really excited to learn another language and the instructor on the video clips is engaging. She does a good job of explaining how to position your mouth to make certain sounds (example - pronouncing the 'r' sound.) This program is designed for middle school aged kids so two of our boys are little young for it. We will definitely need to purchase some hands-on items to supplement the online work, even for our middle schooler. (Flashcards, memory games, etc.) I think for kids that are more hands-on learners, this program could be frustrating... I wish this came with a paper Start-Up guide. I haven't figured out how to add multiple users and think that overall, the program isn't intuitive. Because we haven't gotten the rest of our Timberdoodle curriculum, we haven't really 'dug in' to a schedule for using Fluenz but I think the more we use it, the more we will like it.

I am very impressed with this program so far. My son told me that he learned more in the first few lessons than he had in an entire year of another program. I really like that the teaching is explicit so he does not have to guess word meanings or grammar. Exercises are useful. Highly recommend.

We have used a different Spanish curriculum for years. It was great, but their tech support was so terrible that when our next child was ready for Spanish, I looked for something new. Fluenz is fantastic and their tech support is amazing—necessary for me as a technologically incompetent mom.😆 Fluenz is a very nicely put together program, with amazing photography and a video teacher who does a great job of weaving culture into language lessons. I have two kids using it and both find it enjoyable and engaging. It is self-paced, which is a “pro” for my motivated 7th grade daughter, and a bit of a “con” for my less-motivated 8th grade son.

Though this program would probably work well for others, it wasn't the most user-friendly for us. It is very in-depth (a plus), but your student has to be willing to dedicate the time to use it, practice with it, and be able to organize themselves to proceed through it. My special needs ninth grader often got frustrated while trying to work through it, and I think it might have gone over better if it had been a little more engaging. That being said, for the student who is willing to devote the time and put in the effort, it may work very well.
